      Hi all,

having recently collected a Cupra Born and with it being a rear wheel drive I thought i would ask if anybody has experience of driving an RV in the snow as I recall my BMW going nowhere in years gone by during bad winters and winter tyres are a must as being a double leg amputee I’d feel safer with them getting to/from work and getting around generally as I’ve used they on my other vehicles but curious about using on an EV?

An EV “should” cope better than an ICE due to its near 50:50 weight distribution and the ability to apply power better to the rear wheels.

Also, an EV can control wheel speed, and traction very accurately.

An ICE car has variable power depending on Revs, and the gearbox defines the cars speed. There is less control over the wheel speed compared to an EV.

Of course, how your car behaves in the very rare times its snowing, you wont know until you go out in the white stuff.

Fitting winter tyres is expensive and as its a modification, would need approval by Motability.

Aren’t BMW’s renowned for being 50:50 weight distribution and have traction control?

            – summer hasn’t been yet and you’re thinking about winter!!

Give Motability a call and see what they say. I haven’t seen or heard of EVs getting stuck in the snow . . . yet!

My buddy tried to get snow/winter tyres fitted as his Zafira couldnt make it ot of the street. He took it to Kwikfit to have the tyres changed but Motability said no chance.

It was a few years ago, but av not heard any member getting their tyres changed to snow tyres.

I wasn’t asking Motability to cover the cost as I’ve always purchased them myself given my circumstances but was merely asking if anyone had fitted them and how they found them on an EV.

Snow tyres will improve any vehicle in those cold conditions no matter how it’s powered.

If you’d feel more comfortable with snow tyres on I’d get them, subject to Motability giving the okay but can’t see why they’d object if you’re paying and live in an area affected by snow 🤷‍♂️

Personally I just used to take the day off if it was bad, told work it isn’t safe for me to be out there as a wheelchair user… besides it would only last a day or two then became slush 😁

In all the years I’ve driven an EV snow tyres haven’t been a consideration.  The control you have over the speed of the wheels and the ability to use regenerative braking to gradually reduce speed over just applying physical pads have combined to make me feel much safer.

Disclaimer:  I’m in Cornwall, when we get snow it’s a couple of inches max.

Why not consider a set of 3 peaks rated all season tyres, then you won’t have to have the hastle of keep changing them over.

If you damaged on KF would replace with the same!

I asked Motability about doing that with the Ateca, it’s grip with the 19″ bridgestones was almost non-existent on any amount of snow.

Short answer was no, only factory fitted or equivalent.

Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!

I was allowed to fit Michelin cross climates (trial tyres) on my Skoda Superb, however, as usual advice varies massively depending who’s on the other end of the phone!
