I replaced my kitchen wall units, all of which had hard wired under cabinet 240V lights. I replaced all of my units except one, I now have a light and cable sticking out the wall. My wife wants to put a shelf with fairy lights or something similar all of which require a transformer. All of the lights I’ve seen have the transformer and plug combined. How do I link the fairy lights to this circuit so when the cabinet lights come on the new fairy lights come on at the same time on the same circuit?

The only person who got all his work done by Friday was Robinson Crusoe.

Now that we’re all here maybe I could bother you for another bit of advice. The two switches next to the cable need changed and tidying up. The dimmer is for the ceiling spot lights and the switch is for the under cabinet lights. I won’t to fit an ordinary switch instead of the dimmer as I can’t get a dimmer the same design as my other switches and sockets. So can I just change the dimmer to an ordinary switch?

Remember to attach  the earth to the new switch.

Yes you can change the dimmer for a normal light switch, just wire it like for like, don’t forget to turn the power off first. Take a picture before you disconnect the old switch so you have something to look at for reference.

How do you earth onto a plastic back box?

Plastic boxes don’t need earthing, is the wall not solid brick? If the wall is plasterboard the dimmer switch will have a plastic dry lining box, however there should be a earth wire or wires in there, as the new switch is metallic the switch will need earthing the new switch will have a terminal for this.

If you’re referring to the supply for the driver and using a plastic pattress box and plastic blanking plate then neither of these or the driver need an earth, the driver is double insulated, the square inside a square symbol. The redundant light cable coming out of the wall may or may not have an earth wire and if it has then my gut feeling is it’s not connected to earth at the other end of the cable. Where the existing undercabinet lights florescent strip lights?

If the wall is solid brick then any flush mounted sockets or switches will have a sunken back box that’s metallic and will need an earth and any switch that’s metallic will need an earth. Any socket plastic or metallic needs an earth because anything you plug in may need an earth. Rule of thumb if all is plastic it does not need an earth unless it’s a socket if any part is metallic it nees an earth.

Yes the view is great I was not aware I’d posted any of the view until I looked back at the pictures.

I would prefer not to name the site on an open forum for discretionary reasons plus I don’t want Brydo to know where he can find me if he electrocutes himself ???.

I will say it’s in Wales and the sea view is westwards and we have some fantastic sunsets, I took this photo last week it’s a shame it was not warm enough to sit outside.

I get similar views from our kitchen/bedroom windows of sunsets like that and I’m in wales 🙂
