Hello one and all, I want to start off with an introduction. My Real name is James and I’m a 31 year old with spinal issues as a result of a motorbike accident in 2014 and a workplace incident in 2016.

I love technology and I’ve lived cars for as long as I can remember. I’m not a journalist or writer, but I aim to be as open and transparent with my myth busting as possible. What I aim to do is to hunt out myths and misconceptions about EV ownership and to see if they are true or not. I intend to personally test as many of these as possible but, until my Kona arrives I will diving into every owners forum and corner of the internet to get these answers for you all.

The first topic I’m covering is “the affect of sitting in traffic to my EV range/battery.

Here are a few links to read yourself and if you want to skip the reading part my conclusion will be just underneath.

      http://shorturl.at/oLVY4

      http://shorturl.at/ahvK9

      http://shorturl.at/sMPYZ

Conclusion : So after quite a bit of reading and digging into this and spotting a worrying amount of misinformation, I have found that almost all electric vehicles could cope with many hours of sitting stuck in traffic whilst having heating/AC, radio, heated seats and even mobile phones connected for charging would lose <5% or a few miles. Now if you were at a very low percentage of range left when you hit a traffic jam then maybe you would have cause for concern but, I’d be confident in saying that 9/10 times hitting lengthy delays even in extreme weather would pose no issue to you or put you at high risk of being stranded.

In conclusion I’d say that this myth is BUSTED, so if your friends say “oh you’ll be stuffed in an electric car in traffic” you can tell them this information and educate them.

Please let me know what other myths & misconceptions you’ve heard and want me to bust. Happy motoring.

I would say this is rubbish but I can give another way of looking at it. I am the driver for my disabled wife so spend a lot of time parked outside hospital so imagine the cold winter last year I would turn engine on to keep warm then off until too cold then back on etc etc. so last week I had to wait outside hospital in EV now I knew i wasn’t going anywhere else that day except home so could waste range. Arrived at hospital didn’t turn motor off carried on with a/c listening to music turning temp down as required got in back for more legroom and looking at internet. After about 2 hours my wife returned and I think I had lost around 18 miles of range. But how much diesel would I have used for same period.

no I feel it’s a myth well busted

when i put heater on my predicted range drops by 40/ 50 miles instantly, but goes back up when you switch it off again, so i dont think using it is particularly as wasteful as with ice vehicles. electric seat and steering wheel dont affect range at all oddly.

apparently the most efficient way to stay warm is by using the heated seats as they’re in contact with the body.

Another way I have noticed is warm car quickly without driving as they do warm up quickly then put into eco mode and it stays warm

I love the approach of myth busting. Original thinking is the most difficult thing to do. Even our way of life means google and someones else’s ideas are our goto. If you accept that but test everything compare and contrast, that’s brilliant. If I come across any fit subject for you to investigate I will post. Keep up the good work. Your piece above is something I have wondered about quite a bit.

It’s the way the Kona and most other EV’s work, most of the electrical systems like radio, lights, heated seat run off the 12V battery, only the A/C runs off the main traction battery.

I’ve ordered a kona premium but I was wondering how long you’ve had yours and what your thoughts are about it?

I picked up mine last Easter, so coming on 10 months, done nearly 22k miles now and love it, one of the best cars I’ve ever had, range has dropped a bit now it’s winter, but still around 250 miles on a full charge and love getting into a defrosted warm car in the morning.

suppose its same with most new cars but on the kona ev, its emergency braking is shockingly fast. it kinda went off when i was reversing(dont know what it saw) and it really banged to a stop instantly, not that i was doing more than a couple of mph. i was convinced i’d hit something, but no, it was the emergency brake.  one thing tho, you dont need chemical laxitives with that around lol.

not sure if it can be switched off but would be interesting to know.

so is modern emegency braking in reverse a new thing??

only had it a month, but am already very impressed overall. nice car to drive, especially as i dont do big miles, so it just potters about and you never have to visit a petrol pump.  smooth and quiet, and as has been said, the remote warming up etc is a delight.
