Just wondering if any one can help with my query please, as I’m now able to look for my replacement car what happens if you run out of charge whilst out somewhere and like where we live there aren’t many charge  points on the route you’re travelling?

This really shouldn’t be a problem if you plan your journey properly. The car, and many apps, can plan your route taking into account the need for charging.  Before ordering an EV you should consider how far you regularly drive on a daily basis and work out if the car you’re looking at has sufficient range. Also, if you are in an area with few charging points, you would ideally have a charger installed at your home.

However, if all else fails, call the RAC and they’ll give you a charge to get you to the next charge point or home.

Thank you I know all the first bit but was wondering how they would charge you if it did happen as I do drive on my own a lot

            Honestly, dont worry about it.

Ive had my BWM i3s for nearly 4 years, and never come anywhere close to running out of charge, even though I’ve done some big distances and its got a relatively small range.

These days, most cars have a decent range, so you’ll be either unlucky/careless to come anywhere close to running out.

But, the RAC now are rolling out EV emergency charging. Dont let it put you off (despite what YouTube and the vocal antiEV crowd want to yell about ).

If your EV runs out of charge, you just contact RAC they will come out and put enough juice into the car to get you to the nearest chargepoint.

Its the same process if you run out of petrol or diesel.

Plan your journey and not going lower than  20% charge

And this will not only never be a problem but also topping up to 80% will be quicker

@Nannieree this running out of charge rarely happens now, I  can’t remember the last time I heard about someone doing it 🤷‍♂️ and I’d guess if they do it’s gony be a 90% chance of operator error 🤦‍♂️

You say there aren’t many charge points where you live/travel… which part of the country is that because it’s more likely you just haven’t seen them?

I have just done a 300 mile day to Gateshead and back, stopped for a charge, a pee and a sandwich at Tescos in Hexham. My car has a 200 mile range (a 2021 MG5 standard range) which is on the low side for most EVs these days.

Sorry perhaps I didn’t word my post properly I was only wondering how you would be boosted say so thank you all for your replies. I live in Norfolk but it would mean going out if my way to charge which isn’t a problem just  a pain .

@Nannieree if you can charge at home there are no issues with getting a charge while out and about, if you can’t then a bit more planning is required but is, as you say, ‘a pain’ ☹️

Last month I stayed near Norwich while visiting Lowestoft to do another of the 4 points and had no problems getting a charge, I had planned to visit the big Gridserve hub at Norwich but in the end didn’t need to… I’ll use that as another excuse to go there because Lowestoft wasn’t great ☹️

But as already stated, if you did run out of charge phone the RAC to get recovered. However I’d recommend not waiting until the car dies in the middle of a junction or on a fast A road but if you think you’re going to get stuck with only a few % left then park up somewhere safe and call them 👍

Did you find Ness point, the most easterly?

Mum originates from Lowestoft and have fond memories of going twice a year. The beach is nice and there are some nice walks along the top path from the beach and alot of history. Still go every few years!

                        Can recomend-

                        Oulton Broad

Gorlston, there’s a car park at the harbour mouth where you can see the big ships going into the Yarmouth harbour.

Yarmouth if you like the hustle and bustle.

@kezo yes, it was Ness Point I wanted to visit as I’ve done all 4 points of the compass 🧭 and that was the last one ( Dunnet Head, Lizard Point & Ardnamurchan Lighthouse) plus the wife was doing a thing called the UK Yarn Crawl so she wanted to see the most easterly shop (Over The Hook, London Rd South). We’d been at the Fully Charged show in Harrogate the days before then stayed over at Dunston Hall Hotel just south of Norwich which had on site chargers. Unfortunately we only had a couple of days to complete the Yarn Crawl so it was a flying visit to the area but planning to go back next year for longer 🤞

The question demonstrates what happens when those opposed to EVs are given a free rein at spreading either extremely outdated ‘facts’ or complete nonsense.

Many years ago, the infrastructure was such that it was reasonably possible to run out of charge, especially with a vehicle that offered 80 miles from new.  Now you have most EVs capable of clearing 150 miles and many touching 300, plus an infrastructure that is significantly better, the chances of simply running out are pretty slim unless the driver ignores the often large display giving range remaining and the numerous beeps, pings and flashing lights telling you to find a charger.

To answer that question, though, the RAC have recharge kits in many vehicles which can put a few miles in just so you can find a charger.
