Do I need to declare previous claims?

      Hello everyone,

First time posting so apologies in advance!

When we originally ordered a car through Kia, the salesperson did not ask my wife and I about any previous accidents/claims/convictions.

This is our first car on Motability so we did not think to question this and assumed the insurance is included irrespective.

When we collected the car the salesperson claimed he had asked us but we are certain he did not at the time of the order.

My question is whether we need to inform Direct Line now and if we do, will this increase our premiums?

Between my wife and I we have three non-fault claims and no convictions.

Would really appreciate some advice on this.

      Thank you!

You dont pay “insurance premiums” with a motability car everything from servicing to the cars insurance to breakdown cover is included in your contract with motability.

As has been pointed out, we don’t pay direct premiums as the cost is covered from the sacrificed benefits and advance payments, so there won’t be any additional costs.

If you are concerned about the need to declare past claims I’d call Direct Line Motability directly and they can put your mind at ease.

            Thank you for your responses.

The reason I ask is when I asked a Motability advisor on the chat feature, they suggested it is important to inform the insurer.

Naz – as we have explained, there are NO premiums to pay whatsoever, so even with claims that are entirely your fault there is no financial consequence beyond the (£250?) excess. You are worrying about a problem that doesn’t exist as a Motability customer. It’s one of the benefits of the scheme. Call Direct Line to put your mind at ease.

I think the owner of the Motability car can get one/drive one with any previous claims history but additional drivers are scrutinised more. I could he wrong.

                    @Naz

You did sign a legal lease agreement with Motability.

If there are any legal malfeasance, the blame will be on you.

The best advice is to phone direct line and ask their advice about previous accidents, even no fault claims.

It should be ok, but for your own peace of mind, discuss it with the professionals at Direct Line and not members on a forum.

If you can, let us know how you got on.

I spoke with a Direct Line (Motability) agent via their online chat channel.

Any previous FAULT accidents must be reported. Any NON-fault accidents do not need to be reported.

                      Premiums will not be affected.

Brilliant Naz, that puts your mind at ease and thanks for letting us know the outcome.

You have to be very careful with insurance companies, alway better to check with them first.
