Just popped out to stick the charger in and no joy, the charging port on the car is flashing red. Had a look on line and if it doesn’t remedy itself it needs to go into the garage. I’ve tried a couple of times and it’s still red. I will leave it overnight and try in the morning.
I feel a visit to the garage coming on ?????

JamesMake sure the terminal’s are clean, we had this issue and it was a small amount of grime that we got from public chargers
Hope it gets sorted or your 140mpg will soon drop ?
March 17, 2022 at 10:13 pm #180342Excuse me James 148.6 mpg if you don’t mind ???
I will have a look at that tomorrow James and see if there’s anything that needs removed.

Brief google reveals that it’s not a rare occurrence, but the reasons for it aren’t always the same. For example, for some reason the car wouldn’t start charging if it wasn’t locked/in “sleep” mode.
Do you get the white courtesy light when you open the flap? Sorry that i can’t be of more help, just trying to google around.
edit: smartest thing to do probably would be to drive to a public charger and see if it charges there. If it does, something’s wrong with your circuit/connection/cable – if it doesn’t, something’s wrong with the car. Easier to figure out what’s wrong once you eliminate possibilities.

I did a bit of a scan online and found similar posts to that which you have found.
This is probably nothing to do with it but on my way home, just before the problem started, I felt the regen of the brakes more severe than previously. Severe is probably not the correct word to use as the regen in the xc40 is mild compared to others.

When you get the red flashing light on the charge port, what is the light in the cable doing?
March 18, 2022 at 10:19 am #180362
ReneYeah.. Not sure if the increased generator resistance has anything to do with it, i think if it was broken you’d get some kind of error message in the cars infotainment/diagnosis screen (the Ateca has one, pretty sure the XC40 does too somewhere?). It’s something the car should notice by itself. If you have, you could also try an OBD2 scanner and see if it spits out anything (not quite sure how well they work on the XC40).
As mentioned, i’d try a public charger, and from there you know your course of action. If it charges at a public station, the cable would be the next bet – in that case, i’d drive to Volvo and ask them to plug it in at their charging station with a different XC40, XC60 or something.
If the cable then does charge, it probably would be time to get out the multimeter and check voltages in your garage when you plug the car in (or wherever you plug it in).
If of course the car doesn’t charge at a public station (with a different cable than the one you’re using at home, of course), then it’s time to book an appointment since by that point then there’s probably nothing you can do yourself.

ReneYou mean courtesy car?
I don’t think they’d flat out replace the car.
March 18, 2022 at 11:47 am #180371That’s them been and now gone. Couldn’t fix it so it’s away to the Volvo garage. They will try to fix it today “but unlikely “ the guy said, so will likely need a courtesy car tomorrow ??

ajnBloody hell Brydo, what you doing to these cars ?, I’m still play email ping pong with someone about booking in the car over the driver seat heating not working, original showroom/dealer has moved on from Volvo apparently..
Should I just contact motability, let them sort it…
Seems to be just stalling, and wasting time with this guy, 4times I’ve sent the number plate, yet keeps asking for it?
March 18, 2022 at 2:08 pm #180399No courtesy car available, called motability, 25 minute wait to be answered. They passed it to RAC who called and told me someone else would call to give me a choice of cars if they have a choice, if not I would need to take whatever they offer. As you can imagine that didn’t go down well.

March 18, 2022 at 8:01 pm #180437Well no cars available and to make matters worse a phone call from Volvo reveals the car will be with them for four days! So asked Volvo if I can have car back, as it’s only the charger that has problems. Thankfully they hadn’t started work so I went over and retrieved the car. Whilst I was there I called the car hire company to arrange a day when they will have a car available only to be told “it doesn’t work like that”, “we work on a basis of first in first out.
So to cut a long story short Volvo are ordering the part in, when the car hire company phone me to say they have a car, I will call Volvo to get a date for them to fix it. The car hire company said not to worry if we have the car a few days before the garage can take it as I can have the car for as long as i need it.
Worry free motoring ???????

Last time we had one of theirs we had to reject the first two. One smelled of tobacco smoke and the other stank of dog.. The third was almost new however and hadn’t had time to get mistreated.
March 18, 2022 at 8:41 pm #180442I think it is Eurocar wigwam, my expectations are now very low.

On average they take over 5 days to be repaired, compared to 3 for petrol cars. They’re also more than twice as likely to get more than 1 fault than a petrol within 12 month period.

ReneDoesn’t match with what i’m reading on What Car, so if you could provide some source on that, that’d be great.
Not to mention, his car isn’t an EV.
March 19, 2022 at 10:43 am #180469Hi @Rene
Good point about his car not being an EV. In fact mild hybrids did very well, plug-ins were also worse than petrol.
I wrote “according to What Car”, the data was compiled from Which? 2021 Car Survey for vehicles up to 4 years old. Sorry about that, I was still excited about Leeds winning that I mustn’t have been concentrating.
Anyway, I found the article on This is Money –
