Have any members on the forum taken delivery of a BYD car, Atto3 or Dolphin, if so what are your experiences and opinions of the car and dealerships?

I’m sure that many people will be interested to hear, as BYD look like they are very serious at becoming a major player in the EV market and are targeting Motability customers with nil AP on their cars to help get a foothold in the UK.

I would have built my dreams with them, if the AWD Seal had  joined the scheme this month ?

Arnold Clarke & Stratstone I believe are the main dealers for BYD. Both delerships are mult brand but, perhaps Stratstone is the more upmarket one.

Dolpin I think was carbuyer’s car of the year and the Atto 3 the bigger of the two, with a more gym styled interior with decent materials and of course their well known Blade Battery!

I test drove the BYD Atto 3 in December.  Very bright, spacious interior with the full panoramic roof.  Easy access and drove well enough although I only drove through some 30/40 mph areas.  A few things put me off though; the artificial EV noise in town driving after 15 minutes was pretty intrusive inside the cabin.  The small driver information display was wonky as in off centre and going to the side.  This alone would drive me insane over 3 years.  During my investigations I found that there were issues with the heating system and the infotainment software.

It will have it’s place in the scheme, it’s excellent value for money, a full 5 seater mpv, with very good equipment levels. If I still had kids at home it’s a no brainer.  Definitely worth a test drive for sure.

I was under the impression BYD sorted the software bugs, with the infotainment and heater sometime ago now. The ice cream van sound inside the car can be adjusted to different themes and I believed turnned off. The pedestrian warning heme can also be changed aswell but, not turned off, also  the indicator clicking sound can be changed including other settings. As for the drivers display I thought the steering wheel was offset making it look a little odd lol.

The info screen is tilted left as they are for left hand drive models and they just stuck with them for right hand drive cars. A few reviews mentioned it.

Thanks for the feedback. I’m going to call in at a dealership this week to have a look, I don’t have an appointment and have not arranged a test drive, but will update my findings once I have seen the cars.

Father in law arrived at ours in his new Atto 3 on Christmas Eve, he loves it, I say his, but it was the demonstrator. Apparently they went to Glasgow, dealer did all the view/scan/pics of his scheme Kona then had them sign up for the Atto 3 which was parked outside on a charger (full charge needed to get home). They waited, then the car vanished, then they were told to go have lunch, see some sights, the car was still charging…

Upon return, they waited and the sales lady got increasingly flustered before admitting the car had a charging fault. They could not take their Kona back as it had been signed off lease (and was already sold) and so, after a bit of wrangling, the dealership gave them the demonstrator over xmas with the promise to deliver their car, once fixed, to their home in Dundee.

Car was pretty good, more spacious than I thought it would be and it’s nice to not see a swathe of piano black! He says less bongs than the Kona and he loves the rotatable screen, bright interior and the electric driving experience of smooth silence. I liked the info interface, very slick and quick. I’ll be test driving one later this year after seeing and sitting in his.

I visited the LSH BYD showroom in Stockport, they had all 3 models in the showroom,  including numerous Dolphins, 2 Atto 3’s and Seal.

The salesman was very knowledgeable, patient and courteous which made my visit very informative, relaxing and a pleasant experience.

I was very impressed by each of the models, the build quality is equally on a par with the major brands if not better than some in my opinion.

The tech on the car was easy to use, in particular the voice commands, far better than any other car I have tried and the infotainment screen clear and quick to respond, the 360 camera is fantastic and sharp.

All in all very impressive cars, each in their own way. The Seal was definitely the stand out model, but the Dolphin and Atto 3, both still great cars for their target market. The Dolphin although small on the outside was very spacious inside and easy to get into.

Each of the interiors were extremely comfortable, with nice soft touch surfaces everywhere, the seats were excellent, but the Dolphin was lacking somewhat in lumbar support, but not uncomfortable at all.

My pick for the models on Motability would be the Atto 3, but I would definitely recommend anyone looking for an EV to go and see them, you will not be disappointed.

I didn’t have a test drive, but I will certainly be doing so nearer my time to change.

I took delivery of my Dolphin Comfort 3 weeks ago. I’m new to both EVs & Automatics so on a huge learning curve. Tried to add my vehicle to the BYD app but it asks to scan a QR code. Tried the one next to the VIN but is says expired. Anyone any idea? Also mine is not that accurate on mileage. I regularly do a trip which I know is 71 miles but even driving economically it uses over 100 miles of charge.

Give the dealer where you got from a call.

using 100 miles of charge in cold temperatures and the use of heating is about right.

Can’t help with the app issue but regarding the range used that’s just normal.  The estimated range displayed is known as the GOM… Guess O Meter ?‍♂️ so it’s only guessing how much range you have, some cars are more accurate than others.  Plus you are starting off with a cold battery and a cold cabin so they both have to be heated up every time, this’ll ease when things start to get warmer outside.

Father in Law now has another Atto 3, his original could not be fixed by Arnold Clark and is on its way back to China. This caused all sorts of issues with Motability, they don’t seem prepared for this sort of thing. Anyway, all sorted, Arnold Clark bunged in a few extras and gave them a pre-paid charge card  to say sorry. New car has no issues and in-laws are happy.

We went out on a run, quieter than the Soul, good finish, software looked well sorted and all in all was hard to fault, about all I could glean from the drivers seat was a slightly sharp protrusion on the door against my leg as I am not a slim legged chap.

BYD now need a slightly larger model to compete with Enyaq/Ariya.

How long since December time did it take for Arnold Clrk to issue them with a new car and were they allowed to keep the demo car throgh out.

You can only imagine something like this to happen, causing Motability not to know whether they are coming or going lol.

Good to hear it got sorted for them 🙂

We have the Seal and Seal U will be available soon in the UK. Whether or not any of them make it to the scheme is a different matter!

You will find this interesting then. BYD are very over optimistic with range claims – especially with their Dolphin and Seal models…

When you look at how many miles under the manufacturers claimed range, the results are rather different. I guess when you combine the kerb weight, battery size/chemistry and range the chart will change again. That said the results are shocking on all of them.

                                      EQE – 80 miles
