I sent an email saying I don’t like to make phone calls (partly due to brain fog, partly mental health issues) can I please apply for a grant online, as a reasonable adjustment especially after last time I had a really bad experience from the Motability person who just kept saying you can get a Qashqai….

      Their reply?

Here’s our phone number give us a call….

What part of reasonable adjustment don’t they get? I can’t be the only person who feels really uncomfortable calling to the point of having a panic attack. I know I’m often over sensitive etc but I know my issues and triggers and I’m trying to manage it.

You’re not, I much prefer to converse in writing although some inferences can be missed.

While it staggers me that a charity for the disabled can’t make accommodations for people’s disabilities I’m not that surprised.  Most organisations will have some clever person set up processes to be as efficient as possible whilst not missing out essential items.  As someone who installed such procedures, it’s very easy to miss people’s specific requirements unless you’ve a speciality of working with/planning for special needs.

Hopefully there’s a practical solution for you. ?

And they have the means to – there is an online application form – filled it out when applying for my AP Grant.

Reiterate that you are unable to call them.

Complaints policy might be useful: https://www.motabilityfoundation.org.uk/contact-us/motability-foundation-complaint-process/

Just a thought, could you get a family member or friend to be your advocate and ask them to call Motability? I appreciate the negative connotations but if it speeds it up for you, might that work? Like I said, just a thought.

I have no problems speaking on the phone, but I much prefer to have a paper trail of what has been said so I do sympathise.

I’m profoundly deaf, applied for a grant and had to contact Complaints Department because the person on the Grants Team assigned to my case was unable to receive my emails in correspondence. For some stupid reason, my emails would get blocked by system.

Had somebody call for me, was given information that contradicted what I was already told by email. Then I was later informed that the information provided on phone was incorrect and to call again. Arranged for somebody to call for me, they were notified that the Grants team would only speak to me directly, even though I’m unable to talk on phone but was in the room at the time. They wouldn’t budge.

Complaints team have no issues with receiving or sending the emails, so they kind of took over. By that point I’d had enough and have been saving to pay for a grant rather than go through that again. Months of uncertainty and stress in trying to find out what to do because of my deafness. Complaints team said there’s nothing they can do, it’s an issue with the Grants team system.

Wow. Say what you will about Motability, they do treat disability with disdain. That is shocking ?

When I enquired about a grant on the phone, I was scolded that they are a charity and if I’m sitting on a load of money then they are not likely to help me.  I don’t know where she thought I had that kind of money from, but I was so put off I borrowed the money from elsewhere.

I think they have updated their Grant application system:
