    Chris

      Good morning all

I have been thinking lately about starting up a YouTube channel about cars currently on the scheme. A brief search has only brought up personal experiences about the process, I was thinking more about testing and reviewing them.

I am not disabled myself but my family has a range of disabilities. My youngest has a rare genetic condition and uses a wheelchair, my oldest has autism and my wife has epilepsy so I feel like I am in a position too review cars to a high standard.

Now I’m not saying I can cover all needs for everyone as that would be impossible and possibly why no one has done so before! I could cover all the practical stuff though ie:

Boot space for wheelchair, walking aids, Accessibility etc

And of course the practical stuff, economy, build quality, seat comfort, usability and so on.

I know they advise to test drive cars yourselves but sometimes that is just not practical for some and if I help a handful of people to narrow choices, journeys out to test them, I feel like it’s a job well done!

So any thoughts? Positive or negative? I don’t mind as I don’t want to offend people by doing it. I am happy to go into greater detail as too my plans and who I’ve contacted and spoke too.

Sorry its a bit of a long winded post. Cheers people ?

          Thanks mike11

Is this something you feel could benefit yourself? Or possibly someone you know?

Great plan, Chris. We get bits and pieces here but the main meeja reviews do not address our special needs. Go for it.

              Thanks tharg

That’s my thinking, a normal car reviewer ( car wow ) and such used to be OK to an extent but I would focus on the mobility side of the car and such. If enough people are interested then I will definitely do it! After lockdown of course

Sounds like a great idea, the more we as a whole can find out about the suitability of a vehicle regarding the things that apply to disabilities can only be a good thing.

Good idea, Chris, you may be able to get other people local to you to even help with the reviews with their new cars, subject to covid restrictions being eased of course.

Thanks for the positive views people

On a personal level I remember getting our current car ( mitsubishi outlander ) and their were no reviews, apart from the phev version, but none of the reviewers covered essential issues! Like the theatre rear seats which make life easier to get my son in/out of his car seat or the fact you can switch the infotainment screen off  ( but still have the radio, nav on )which is a massive benefit to my wife, those are the sorts of things I feel should be highlighted.

It’s is a good ideal Chris as I for one have struggled over the years with not being abled to test drive so things like the performance of an engine and carrying a heavy load with scooter or wheelchair onboard with all the other junk that average Joe does not need to think about.

Over my many, many hours or even days watching YouTube video’s I think I’ve seen less than a handful that were actual disabled persons trying to manhandle or load a scooter into the boot of their car, most are shop demonstrators some of which don’t have a clue, so it’s refreshing to see someone who knows better.

Most of my problems regarding cars and my disability I’ve learned over 12 years how to cope with them but still get caught every now and again by bad seating in a car for instance and sitting in the seat of a car in a showroom for 10 minutes doesn’t really help so seeing how others get around their problems would be great seeing it as a video as something’s are just too hard to explain in a written form.

Not sure how the process of uploading works with YT, not had a lot of interest TBH, but maybe we could make the odd video ourselves (when it gets warmer) and upload them to your channel should you go ahead and if it’s OK to do that maybe the channel becomes a bit like this forum but in film.

                        Good luck.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Yes that would be something I’d be up for, as gothitjulie suggested I would be looking into local motability customers and their experiences with their current cars.</p>

As the above video shows, each disability is different. So you would have problems generalising the vehicles. The only way is each disabled person to try each model.

Nail – head – hammer – hit, Chris! You really should try it, mate – judging from responses here. Obviously have to wait for whole pandemic thing to go away. I would offer to help (have done some car reviews as a print journo) but doubt I could handle the video side.

                                        Hi crispy

I do see what you mean by not all disabilities are the same ( as I stated when first posting this ) but the general lay out and cut and finish still applies even with adaptations. I would never try and advise adaptations for a car as their are specialists to do that, and I’m definitely not one of them, but fuel economy? What’s it like over s pothole? Is it underpowered once loaded with stuff? I can answer all of that! That is primarily what the channel would be about plus a few other ideas I have.

Thanks for the offer tharg, I’ve no experience of testing or writing about cars but I can edit videos quite easily. I may have to lean on you when I get to do this for some pointers! Although I ask everyone to tell me areas which I could improve as I want to include as many needs, requirements etc as I can not just ones I think will help

                                                Hi crispy

Rest assured I will in no way be advising anyone’s choice I will simply be showing what the car is like for the real world. As for a wheelchair I only have my sons for reference ( who is 7 ) and its a manual one so it would be that I’d use as a comparison, I will always advise a visit and test drive.

I will be talking to the motability specialist at each dealership though and quizzing them on essential matters ( possibly even ap discounts ?)

Just need a catchy name for it now and when I do get round to doing this I hope anyone watching will point out any info I may of missed, that is relevant to themselves, or any ways to make it better for them.

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback and I will be back in due course to let everyone know of where in the process I am at
