I extended my Mazda CX5 because it took VW 18 months to build my order. Not my choice and out of my control.

I am completely opposite to you @ajn – I start looking for my next car six months after I’ve had a car!!

It’s worth keeping in mind that the automatic right to a 2 year extension (making it a 5 year lease) has now been removed and is only allowed for cars with under 20,000 miles at the 3 year mark or those with adaptations, although implementation of this policy has been inconsistent.

However, some people have managed to find an option to still extend to 5 years on their online account. If you have this option, do it ASAP. It doesn’t commit you to anything, as you can change at any time within that 2 years but, as I say, that option is going.

My online account didn’t have that option, and they refused my request to extend, saying that the maximum extension allowed would be 3 months, but I made a case to them that the lease that we took out 3 years earlier contained a clause that made provision for extensions and that they couldn’t vary the terms of a lease agreement without contacting us and giving us the option to withdraw from the lease without penalty (which they hadn’t done). They then allowed the 5 year extension! As it happened, we ordered a new car a few months later, so didn’t need the extension, but there was a principle at stake!

What you mustn’t do is agree to a 3 month or 12 month extension. Motability will only allow one extension, so always make it a 2 year extension so that you can change at any time within that 2 years.

Not lazy, economically sensible and slightly more enviromentally friendly:

I extended the lease on my Mitsubishi PHEV in summer 2023, aiming for the full 5 years. The car was fine, I’d put less miles on the clock than I thought I would (happy circumstance that my commute now has accessible public transport). Extension was all very easy and Motability allow you start a new lease at any point within the 2 year extension.

This summer I started looking at replacements, given the long lead times (up to 9/13 months would take my lease up to the full 5 years). I therefore ordered a BEV in July expecting delivery next March, but a cancellation means I’ll get it in a couple of weeks. I expect to extend this new car to the full five years, as it seems crazy to replace every 3 years and it spreads the upfront payment over 5 years, making it more acceptable.

            blah, blah, blah

Thanks for the replies, Glos I did extend on the app, just in time for the full 5 years just before the 3 year lease ended.

must say easy to do, no prob at all which was great..

I’m thinking of ordering another xc40 before November 25 as then I look forward to another 3 yrs..

Hi people, So i have a question, my next car order window opened on the 8th Oct, my present car lease runs until the 8th Jan. 2025.  If I extend for 2 years (which i can as i have the option when logging onto my online account) when does the 2 year extension start from  the date i extend or from the 7th Jan??

                many thanks in advance

@eckst3 I believe that it extends your lease by 2 years from it’s current end date, so you might be wise to do this ASAP before the option is removed.

As per my post made at 2.41pm today, you will not have an automatic option to extend your next car to 5 years unless you do under 20,000 miles over 3 years or have adaptations. Hopefully you will meet the new criteria so will be OK?

Yeah, didn’t realise these criteria were in force, but I see I would’ve passed on both counts, and if they stay the same at least my adaptations will see me still eligible to extend.

I imagine that as AP’s increase and more EV’s come onto the second hand market, second hand purchasing options may make this need redundant?

                    blah, blah, blah

Glos guy, thanks for the reply, i have at present 14,700 total miles but will extend as i do not want to miss out on an extended 2 year thank you for this information.

i had narrowed my choice to 2 cars before October price change to the ford mache tech +  or the kia sportage gt line s but the later was removed and the price went up from 4750 to 6000 for the ford, wasn’t too happy. so i have fingers crossed they may become reasonably available in January fingers crossed
