As per title. Supply and demand, when supply is limited and demand is high, prices go through the roof.
So, anyone thought about stashing away in a barn preferably, a couple of low miles diesel cars??
They are getting scarce already, and in a couple of years, they can only go up in price. From the comments on here, there is a lot of resistance to going ev, and some may never will.
My pals dad made a fortune buying future classics. He would buy cars, had to be under 4k miles and stored them for 20 years.
Petrol and diesel cars, although not in the same league, but could be a prudent move, sub 20k car, rust free. They are the future classics, if tou got a decent storage place.
Just a thought…

I already have 2 x LR Series 3 and a Defender (all diesel autos) in one of our barns.
Now that I have just taken delivery of the X6, I am toying with whether to trade in my Discovery for a diesel auto Ineos Grenadier (I have been offered more than I paid for the Discovery 2 years ago in p/x), or keep the Discovery and just buy the Grenadier as well.
As we have guarantee of supply of DERV until at least 2055 (and are taking part in the ongoing sustainable road fuels trial), the supply of diesel during the remainder of my driving life shouldn’t be a problem.
Overall, I would say go for it.
December 23, 2023 at 11:23 am #252134Interesting concept. I don’t think that I’d buy any to store, even if I had the space, especially a diesel, but I agree that prices will hold strong on petrol and diesel cars and probably increase as the cut off date draws nearer.
With the average age of cars on our roads being 9 years (so 50% are older than this), if you do the maths starting with the 2035/40 cut off dates, it will be perfectly easy to still be driving an ICE car until around 2060, which is 24 years away. I suspect that a lot of drivers who are 60 or over will easily be able to finish their driving careers in an ICE car should they wish to and, of course, many will.
December 23, 2023 at 12:05 pm #252136I was thinking about the diesels are they are the first to go.
But we are a nation of petrolheads, so any petrol car would be a good un.
Big Dave has the best solution his own fuel tanks.
But they are heavily legislated and have to meet a lot of environmental and safety standards.
For the rest of us, its going to be the availability of petrol.
There will not be the petrol stations as we know it now. Also, as demand and supply drops, it will become astronomically expensive to buy petrol.
You will be able to buy it, and more than likely be able to use it similar to classic cars that dont need mot,s tax etc
But it will be a niche class of enthusiasts, with vehicles over a certain age or something similar.

That’s interesting Dave, what are the reviews like on the Grenadier, have you tested one?

To be honest, I don’t bother with other people’s reviews.
At the Great Yorkshire Show last summer I spoke with Ineos and arranged for our farming business to get one on trial for two weeks. I rather monopolised it whilst it was here!
It put me back in the thought of driving a ‘proper’ Land Rover of old (which I drove in the military) as opposed to the lightweight/plastic LR product currently in production.
The Ineos is certainly more rugged than the current LR Defender and despite trying to get it stuck in atrocious weather on our off-road circuit and on the tops of the Dale, I couldn’t.
Ultimately the farming business may replace the older Defenders with them and I want one for myself.
I really like them, albeit I do find the Discovery probably more comfortable on a longer road run – which is ultimately what I bought the BMW X6 for.
December 23, 2023 at 1:44 pm #252147Harry Metcalfe reviewed it on his Harry’s Garage YouTube channel, I watched it a while ago, can’t remember much but I think he was impressed with it.
December 23, 2023 at 1:56 pm #252149I’d never heard of an Ineos Grenadier @BigDave, so just looked it up. What a cracker. Looks like the classic Defender but with BMW engines and transmissions. I can absolutely see why they appeal, especially if you’ve had one on a prolonged test and it ticked all the boxes.
Great call to keep those old Defenders as well. They will only ever appreciate in value as they are true collectors cars. How are you finding the X6? My wife thinks we should consider one as it doesn’t have the split tailgate that slightly puts me off the X5.
December 23, 2023 at 2:38 pm #252153It very much depends on what you want to store and where you are going to store them and cost to store them in a lock up, if you don’t have the space at home imo.
I have a 1986 Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI, with a T16 PTS conversion producing north of 350bhp in used raced ondition. My grandads (bless him) immaculate 1977 first gen E12 BMW 528 which was bestowed to me on his death and a 1974 MGB GT V8, which sadly needs some body work.
To be honest, I don’t bother with other people’s reviews.
Powered by BMW’s excellent inline 6 B57 engine. Whats not to love!
Edit: Did you go for the 40d X6?

To be honest I am still getting used to it – particularly the BMW ‘eco-system’ electronics/info-tainment system. However, my brother-in-law seems to be taking every possible opportunity to ‘borrow’ it at the moment!
I am pleased I went for the uprated xDrive 40d diesel model – as it does literally go like ‘shxx off a shovel’! Although one thing I have found is that the auto engine cut out (at traffic lights etc) does seem a little slow to restart compared to the Discovery. So, I have switched it off – no doubt much to the disgust of cyclists in York! I believe there is a software update to cure this so will get it sorted at some point.
Comfort wise it is just more comfortable than the Discovery. Knee and leg room up front are great and I don’t feel at all ‘hemmed in’ whilst driving it. The lumbar support is probably the best of any vehicle I have ever driven.
It is just a cruising machine on the motorway. Although x-drive (awd) I haven’t had it out in any mucky stuff or off road yet, so I haven’t explored that side of it – but that is what the Grenadier will be for!

Yes, I did opt for the 40d X6 – a good decision I think.
