hi
one of my friends now qualifies for a motability car. He is wanting his newpher to be his nominated driver once he passes his test who is 25. Will he be able to get the car as soon as he passes or does someone have to be driving for x amount of time before being allowed a motability car?

So long as he meets the requirements there is nothing else in the instructions. He can have been driving for 10 years or 10 minutes it’s not counted. So long as he has a valid driving licence.
July 26, 2024 at 6:34 pm #285697As being 25 is he restricted to certain bhp? for example could his first motability car be a mercedes cla amg or would he be restricted to a slower speed car? as mentioned hes 25 and all i can find on the website is 25+ can drive any as some say ‘Unsuitable for u25s’
July 26, 2024 at 7:03 pm #285698I guess he can drive any of the cars as soon as he passes if hes 25, Motability should change that, insane giving a new driver a 300+ bhp car
July 26, 2024 at 7:52 pm #285699300+ bhp car
How many cars are there with 300bhp +?

Off top of my head there are two however, neither would interest a 25yr old lol.
July 26, 2024 at 9:05 pm #285702Ok so it seems some have been removed from the scheme but you still have multiple electric cars with 286bhp, vw id4,id5, skoda enyaq, audi q4, ioniq 5 AWD is 325bhp, i think bmw i4 was around 300bhp but no longer available.

For example a 1.0l 155bhp Ford puma is as or not far off as quick 0-60 and has a higher top speed than all of them.
BHP isn’t everything 🙂
July 26, 2024 at 10:04 pm #285704You’re kind of missing the point, but anyway where are you getting your figures ? a puma 155bhp takes nearly 9 seconds to 60, the above cars do it in 6 and the AWD ioniq 5 in under 5 seconds, monumental difference to a beginner driver plus they have huge instant torque which is dangerous when a novice tries to accelerate around a bend or corner and kills someone

1.0l ST 7.4s but its the 168 not 155 I thought it had, which isn’t much behind the Enyak 6.7s etc, however, I get what your saying but, I can’t see a 25yr old wanting an ioniq 5 or Enyak or a Mazda cx60, Rav4 (Across) PHEV, which are also 300+ bhp <6s
Whats the excess for a 25yr old inexperienced driver?
July 27, 2024 at 9:47 am #285722Nice one Markah and very accurate.
Just received a letter from DLM, as I had recently added a private plate.
The excess for over 25 (as Markah says doesnt matter if its 10 mins or 10 years) is £100.
Excess 21-24 is £300
Excess 16-20 is £500..
Kinda answers the excess for young drivers.
Honestly thought it would be a brutal excess for someone who is 17…lol.
And yes the youngest is 16 years, its not a typo.

Correct it is torque behind the power curve
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally say the wrong thing.
July 27, 2024 at 11:14 am #285725Eh??
Ford Puma 155bhp and 240nm torque is 9 secs to 60…hee her
That is beaten by all the EV,S mentioned above.
Top speed is meaningless and restricted.
An EV is all torque and the bhp is available right away, it is Indeed throttled back electronically.
An ICE. car on makes its highest bhp at 5000rpm. Below that its in the 70 to 100 range.
Torque on an EV pushes you right into the seat. The Puma cannot achieve that. Lol.
Fag packet numbers on ICE cars, yup still Markeh is correct..lol.
July 27, 2024 at 11:56 am #285726Ford Puma 155bhp and 240nm torque is 9 secs to 60…hee her
The 1.0 Puma ST 248Nm 7.4s – thats as quick as the RWD Ioniq 5
The 1.5 Puma ST 320Nm 6.5s – thats as quick if not quicker than the Enyak.
The difference is a light nimble car vs a heavy clumsy car or most importantly BHP/Torque per ton!
My point is not to argue what power should be unleashed on a new inexperienced driver, but to point out BHP/Torque on its own means diddly squat!
July 27, 2024 at 3:33 pm #285740The Motability rules are just plain stupid. My son who has been driving 8 years with no points and no accidents can’t have the same car as someone who is 25 and has passed his test 10 minutes ago.

It certainly looks that way mate.
Your son must be nearing 25 now?
July 27, 2024 at 5:53 pm #285745Your son is either 25 or hasn’t been driving 8 years, unless hes nearly 25 and been driving for nearly 8 years and passed his test days after his birthday somehow

Unless he took his test at 16.
July 27, 2024 at 6:00 pm #285749If you receive a higher rate mobility allowance, you can learn to drive from the age of 16.
July 27, 2024 at 6:04 pm #285750Just found that out via google, didn’t even know this was a thing.

Correct and yes he’s been driving since he hit 16.
