In reply to: Change in Personalised Number plates
Good news! Motability have removed the (quite peculiar) rule that the personalised number plate must ‘relate’ to the customer, from now on as long as the plate meets the DVLA rules, it is good to go on your car.
Have they announced this as something new? They adropped this requirement years ago!
A couple of weeks ago I contacted them about authorising my new private plate and they did ask if it was my name, nso it was in effect then.
Good news Footloose. I had a hard choice deciding between machine and polymer grey but opted for latter because of availability.
The attitude of a sales person can be instrumental in choosing the car. I tend to avoid showrooms that have mixed brands because I feel the seller isn’t invested in the product and will push whichever brand is the one needing shifting whereas the individual brand showrooms seem more invested in their cars. I’ve had great service from all my Mazda contacts and the latest one couldn’t have been more helpful with things like private plates and cancelling and reordering with Motobility because of a £500 AP drop.
Happy driving.June 23, 2023 at 3:28 pm #224199In reply to: Personalised plates
Roy HarringtonHI Leo, what MB told you is just not correct I have had four private plates on five vehicles ie … AMG GTC x2, and MG X2 (not the same plate) all they asked was is the number plate personal to you …all times I told them it was purchased as a present twice and once each refered to the vehicle make, never, never lied to them if MB were not happy and told me not to fit them I would not have done so, after all it is their rules we play by and we must play by them or forefit the scheme, also if you don’t tell MB about a change of registration plate your insurrance will be void MB MUST be informed of any changes, this is only right. Just as a ‘by the way’ if you are allowed to change your plates make sure they are legal, type, spacing, font, garage name, kite mark ect. if not MB will not be held responsible if you get a fine, they will know because MB are the reg. owner, I don’t think they would be too happy having to deal with extra paperwork through this. Just another thing I have learnt over the years is if you want to transfer the plate and place it on retension or put it on your new vehicle you will need to pay the £80 (last time I did it) to dvla, BUT keep your old original number plates the vehicle was delivered with… I have found your vehicle, if it has the personal plates removed, is put back on the number that was taken off.
anyway play by the rules and there should’nt be any problem

It’s not really a big deal, it’s just a question with a simple answer , whether it’s your initials , a special persons name, fav number etc – just tell them why you want it – we answer a lot more personal questions to qualify for MB
ive had 2 different private plates on MB cars and looking at a 3rd , absolutely no issue ??
it’s just a straight forward question asking about the connection between yourself and your chosen private plate – no biggy ?

The rules are in place due to cost, paperwork takes time, to save that time and any questions about your private plate do it yourself. Order a car let it get registered, ring up motability 24 hours after asking for logbook reference number, if they do ask (mine is related as it’s all my name) but it can be personal for other reasons including it was my dads. The go on dvla website and assign the plate yourself. Then when next leas comes round call them a week before hand over and ask for reference again, the put plate on retention then (you will get a digital copy) you will also have a set of plates from when you picks up the car to put back on.

RubbleHi,
Looking for some guidance on this. I have a new Sportage on order and have been told it’s on a ship (about time! Ordered on 1st April 2022).
My current car had personalised plate on it on delivery – the first time I’d ever had it – how do I ensure I retain my plate?
Thanks
Hi joesto,
Firstly, take your private plate off your current car and put it on retention, then you have two choices;
(i) Ask your dealer to put your private plate on your new car ready for collection day.
or(ii) Take delivery of your new car with normal age related plates then change then to your private plate.
The second option whilst more of a pain will mean you will already have the cars required plates for putting back on at the end of your lease.
Motabilty allow either option, it often depends on how helpful your dealer wants to be!
Good luck ?

You’re welcome. As a further point of interest, you can add a private plate mid lease. I took delivery of our car with a 21 plate standard reg and then when the 71 plates came out I told Motability that I wanted to assign my private plate! I took off the original plates in the car park at Halfords so that they could use them as a template for my new private plates (I have several already but the holes are never in the same place ). The advantage of that is that prior to the end of lease I can get the original reg reassigned and then it’s a 5 minute job to put the old ones back on. I then hand the car back with its original plates.
If I kept my current car for the full lease I would, I’ll be looking at an early exchange when I see something possibly the QQ ot X trail e-power. As there was nothing really on the scheme at the time, Ihastely took a Tuscon Ultimate manual and my knee’s n lega are killing me, even the hospital has recommended me go back to auto or I will have to have an op and no doubt wait years for it 🙂
Thanks any way 🙂

I have a plate on retention and have done for some years, When I last asked Mb if I could use it they said no, because it bears no real meaning to my daughter. I’m just her appointee/named driver??
They’ve relaxed the rules on private plates. They no longer have to relate to the benefit recipient. My wife is the Motability customer but our private plate is my initials. I just told them I was assigning it to our car. No issue at all.

AnonymousI had my private plate on my scheme car and removed it before I got my new car (off the scheme) I already had the orginal plates to put on it, as they had a problem putting it on at the beginning of the lease, long story.
I sent the dealer a scan of the V778 retention document/ in your case the v750 and then took the original on the day of collection and I got the new car with my private plate on.
What I didn’t do was contact dwp soon enough to get my road tax exemption certificate and they didn’t send it out after i first contacted them and had to wait to see if it came but it didn’t so they sent out another. So I had to pay for a full years road tax and then goto the P.O to have the class changed when cert came and got refunded the full 11 months left. So If you have that certificate the dealer can also tax it a disabled.

@kezo happy new year to , regarding the original number that does not matter “if the private plate you purchase is going to be the first number plate registered to the vehicle, when you transfer it at a later date the DVLA would assign an age related number to your vehicle” Above ingo from http://www.plates4less.co.uk Am wanting to go with it from the start as i feel the dealer will do a good job , plus i don’t have to buy new plates and pay for them to be put on , and no additional form filling
no form filling, once you have the v5 (you can also ask the dealer to give you the v5 referance, you go on govt site, put in reg going on the car, new car v5 ref and your ref code on the retention cert. is as easy as that it does not even take 5 mins and you have 3 days from doing it to change.

My bad sorry 🙂 the last time I had a private plate was around 20yrs ago!
In light of this I see no reason why the dealer shouldn’t register it and back to your original question – you could ask the dealer if a photocopy would do. If not there no harm sending the original form but, take a photocopy for your records 🙂 I think the dealer will require the original!

Hi Rico , am coming off the scheme , going private, it will be the first plate assigned to the car. Many Thanks
The problem with that is when you come to sell the car you will loose your plate. Its best to have a standard plate at registration so you can put it back on should you sell.
Admittingly it will cost to transfer plates.
December 8, 2022 at 10:10 pm #202204Limiting =! banning.
Not sure why you went with the misleading headline, but of course they’re not “banning EVs”. They’re restricting use to: exercising one’s profession, shopping, visiting the doctor, attending religious events, attending court appointments etc – under very specific circumstances.
They’re also “restricting” washing machines to 40C only, i don’t see any “switzerland banning washing machines” headlines anywhere, nor do i see any “switzerland is BANNING” headline for HD videos (yes, only SD streaming available, long before it escalates to restrictions in EVs).
In step one, running your washing machine above 40C is illegal. Tumble dryers, Irons and cloth presses are only allowed in a 12 hour window per day for commercial used (outright banned for the private use). Public places only get heated to a maximum of 20C. Fridges in shops aren’t allowed to cool below 9C, private fridges not below 6C etc.
Second step is restricting use of tumble dryers etc to 9 hours per day, public spaces only get heated to 19C, commercial kitchens are banned from heating entirely, kettles are “BANNED” (water only allowed to be heated to 60C), streaming services have to restrict services to SD (480P maximum), etc.
Third step: opening times of shops get reduced by 1-2 hours per day. Freezers need to be encased with styrofoam plates outside of opening times. Public spaces heating 18C, EV journeys restricted to necessary journeys.
Actually banned in step one already:
mobile electric heaters, outside heating or heated seats in ski lifts, mobile ACs and fans, operation of whirlpools, tanning booths, saunas etc pp, private ice cream makers, outside lighting, lighting in parking lots, heating of rooms with constantly open doors, warm water in public toilets, electric leaf blowers.
Banned in step two: advertising screens, lighting for shop windows and decorations, any christmas lights, any tumble dryer or clothing iron (only allowed for commercial places), mini bars, drink coolers, escalators and elevators if stairs are available.
banned in step 3: electric heating in public swimming pools, lighting on sports fields, car wash booths, disco/club lights, ANY USE of dvd or blu ray players, gaming consoles or gaming computers (yes, literally), any streaming service, crypto mining etc.
And in the last step of actual bans (notice again, the last three paragraphs are actual bans, not restrictions):
ski lifts, winter sport facilities, any arcades/casinos/clubs/public fun stuff, cinemas, theater and opera, etc pp.
Not only do need people a reminder that EVs don’t run on magic – they also need a reminder that they shouldn’t get information off of some internet forum post without source material or any explanation, misleading and misrepresenting the entire thing based on a pushy headline by the telegraph and daily mail.
The reality is that a lot of stuff is ACTUALLY being banned before EVs get restricted. Including gaming consoles/video players, and even bloody Netflix.

February 27, 2022 at 5:35 pm #178928Transfering from the current car on the scheme to a new one should not be a big issue, When it was first put on they would of looked at, if it was relevant to the leasee or not.
I did have an issue putting mine on the current car (my 4th on the scheme) as it had been on retention for a while since i joined the scheme and the time was expiring and i’d lose the plate, as you can only keep it off a car for 10 years now, were prior to that you could pay a fee to extend for 1 or upto 3 years.
The issue was due to the dealer not being able to access the dvla system as honda had been hacked. So i got it with a 20 plate as they could do normal registrations and then a little later, I contacted mb and they put it on over the phone no issues at all.
I already had the plates as the dealer had put them on before but could not register it.
Removing it on retention is a different matter as then it could be transfered to a different name and this will need to be done prior to the car being taken back and the new reg plates put on and the new v5 issued by dvla, especially if it was a privately owned car, you would not be able to sell it until you recieved that.
So the questions are about it being taken off and put onto retention and the leasee’s authority is needed. It’s considered an asset i guess and my guess is that they will put the retention certificate in the leasee’s name and say if that’s your wife and you want to put it in your name or it is in your name in the beginning and not the leasee’s, you’d have to transfer it to their name via the dlva using the retention certificate to put it on a car on the scheme. Guess it’s to stop anyone but the registered owner/ leasee removing the plate which is normal.

Honda went above and beyond, due to many factors outside their control. The original mb agent i dealt with was on furlow and the sales manager dealt with it all, this was after the 1st lockdown in 2020 and I was due to exchange in the april but it was june before dealers was open and mb would allow it.
Then there was a problem, putting on my private plate. So they put on a new reg and made me the plates up for my reg, when it could be processed. That was a lot of hassle between the dealer and mb and honda and the service i’ve had since has been great also.
Even asked if i needed an auto when it was in for it’s year service. That’s a 1st, normally with all other cars i’ve had on the scheme that been auto’s (as i need one now) it’s been a manual and no auto’s available..
How things have changed though due to covid and the car industry cancelling those chip orders, that other sector’s then took up and kept those slots and now they cannot get hold of them. Has really hurt them alot.
Part of me think’s this was, is all part of the plan, They restrict car ownership and push the climate agenda but by limiting new car sales and hammering current ice car owners. They the goverments profit. The debt needs to be paid for somehow and seems car owners are always the cashcow.
Personally though I think the dealerships don’t make much from selling mb cars, they really just a broker between Mb, the manufacturer and us and do all the vetting, handle the Ap (which belongs to mb) handing over the car all for a small commission compared to actual sales.
So i can see why in the current situation many don’t seem to care. Time is money and sales is what makes them money. I’ve got 18 months left till my 3 years is up and guess I’ll have to see what’s what then. I am liking the current car alot.
So would consider keeping it for the full 5 years or even buying it, but i dunno if i can afford to do that. Ap’s are crazy as well and the closer we get to 2030 and the more tax and as cost go’s up on ice cars then resale value’s will drop and drop and that’s bad for the scheme. Something i predicted a while back and we are seeing already. Same for the used car market cars that are ulez compliant are in demand those that ain’t are pretty much unsellable or will be soon. My youngest brother, just bought his 1st car after passing his test recently and looking for cars has been tricky, most he liked sold pretty quick and only cars were those not ulez compliant.
For many the scheme is becoming to limited or too expensive upfront, other alternatives have to be looked at. After 10 years plus of hassle free motoring for me on the scheme, the future maybe off the scheme. Plus not having a drivway makes owning an ev not something i am willing to consider, without a trial of how it would work for me.. I feel for those waiting and waiting and in the end let down as no car ever arrives or the spec has changed and the new ap is applied.
October 18, 2021 at 8:44 am #166931You can buy the registration number in advance as it will be owned by you throughout, including whilst it’s on the Motability car. I can’t recall the exact terminology but you can also have an ‘assignee’ (from memory) which, in this case, will be Motability Operations as the registration number will be assigned to a car belonging to them. You can then put it on ‘retention’ towards the end of lease so that you retain the rights to the number.
Just a tip from experience, but I always allow a new car to be registered first with a ‘normal’ number. At a later date I then assign the personalised number. It’s quite cheap to have the plates made up and fitted at Halfords. I then keep the original plates so that when the car is due to go back it’s a 5 minute job to put the original plates back on (if a car has had a normal number from new it’s always allocated that same number back again when you remove a private plate).
October 17, 2021 at 9:40 pm #166909Bought mine in advance of new car, it comes on an A4 certificate, just give that to the supplying dealer when you place the order, and they’ll use that to register the new car once built, and it will be collected with the new plate. I bought the plate in my wifes name as it’s her lease to avoid any issues, the dealer will sort out the registration of the car, but you will still own the plate to transfer off in the future. i should add all previous cars had year plates but this time we added a private plate as you are doing.
Noel, thank you for that.
I assume that you notified Motability before proceeding? Did they query the reason as to why the private registration was to be used? I am tempted to proceed with the purchase before speaking to them.
