If we were changing now I’d definitely take a look, primarily because it’s a good size and, for once, it’s a straight petrol car and not a PHEV! Personally, I don’t mind the look of it. Ok, it’s not a looker, but reasonably imposing.
However, a few things would possibly put me off. Firstly, as is often the case, it’s the base model. It does lack some kit I’d want and looking at the configurator it doesn’t look like you can add many options? Secondly it’s a big car for a 1.3 litre engine and at 163 bhp (from memory) I think it would be a bit gutless.
My main concern, which is odd given that it’s a Merc, would be build quality and reliability. We had a AMG-Line 220d GLB for a week when our previous Tiguan was at VW trying to sort out why the car kept doing emergency braking with leaves and shadows (I make it sound humorous, but it could have been fatal, as it happened once on a motorway when going under a bridge at 75 mph and another time in rain when just moments before a white van man had been tailgating me). Anyway, the massive instrument cluster / infotainment screen went completely blank on 2 occasions during the week, which meant that I had absolutely no idea what speed I was doing (which is really unsettling and can’t be used as an excuse) and another time the car went into ‘limp home mode’ when I was driving it and left me with virtually no power and I could only do about 10 mph. I managed to eventually clear it by using kick down, but all of that happened in 5 days. As a diesel, the torque was fine but the one on the scheme is a low powered petrol, so would need a good test drive.
