I’ll answer your question first. In a world where ‘safety’ features are advancing, there should be a base level that is compulsory on all scheme cars, things like pedestrian collision avoidance, blind spot detection and at least front and rear cameras for parking. There’s a huge amount on top of that which isn’t mature enough to be 100% safe, like lane keep assistance that tries to prevent you from overtaking parked cars. There’s also a lot of toys, bells, whistles that are nice for some people and absolutely essential to others. Like the power boot, if you can’t reach up and pull it becomes impossible to have anything else and remain independent. Heated seats are great if you have back issues and while there are other solutions, the factory fitted ones always are preferred. Even electric seats can be the difference between sitting comfortably and not being able to go far. I tried raising a seat with that pump adjustment that some have, ended up getting out to lift the seat. There needs to be a balance between those who just need a comfortable car that works but without too much clever stuff and something for those who do need everything possible to help them.
completely agree.
There should be a new minimum standard of safety kit for all Motability vehicles, which is clearly affordable ( if they can give back £750, they can negotiate affordable prices for fitted safety measures ?) but what should the minimum standard be?
