I am just delighted and appreciative of Motability allowing me to have such an amazing car.

Whilst I’m delighted to hear how excited you are at getting your new car, I’m not sure that I get the bit about how ‘appreciative’ you are for Motability ‘allowing’ you to have it. Let’s just take a reality check here. They aren’t gifting you the car to keep. You are paying them over £17,000 (plus any options) just to lease a car that they buy VAT free, that you will never own and have to hand back after 3 years with absolutely nothing to show for it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a good deal and it’s far more sensible to hand over your £12k benefits for a car like this than a runabout, but you are buying in to a commercial contract. Motability Operations are like any other business and they make a handsome profit on each and every lease. They aren’t doing you any favours!

I’m just the type of person who is grateful and appreciative for any help and support I can get.  The fact the Motability are giving me options to upgrade to great cars that I could never afford to own, or lease, nor would I likely ever be approved for the finance/credit to lease such cars, given that I am on disability – that is mostly why I am appreciative and grateful.

Plus, leasing the Sport over 3 years on Motability will cost me a grand total of £100 a month in real terms. by that I mean, I will be £100 a month worse off financially to drive such a car.

To get that figure I factored in the current cost of my annual insurance and breakdown cover (AA with garage repairs cover), along with an average annual servicing/repairing cost including tires (my current car is 12 year old) and then I factored in the fuel cost vs electric cost.

Number crunching aside, there is no way I could ever afford to lease a car like this with everything that is included and whilst Motability buy these cars with no VAT they pass that discount on to hence the reduced monthly payment vs leasing from BMW directly.

I have never had a motability car before and I am just grateful that we live in a country that provides those of us with cars who need them.

Hopefully that has answered your questions? We are all different and we set different values on things. To anyone who has issues with the scheme then I would advise them to save their money and buy a car.

*Edited to add some financial context. My calculations were based upon this car costing me £14,500 over 3 years as I got it at the £5K AP minus £750 first car allowance. I compared keeping the car I have with the costs of the Sport over 3 years.
