Legal but it can change the steering quality as the car is originally set up on all new tyres
Different tyre/make/ tread pattern with different tread depth on the front axle can and did make a huge difference to the quality of my cars steering having just 600 miles of used tread on original tyre
Maybe because it was a sport set up BMW
Who knows but hated driving it after that as wanted to veer left all the time
