What type of vehicle are you requesting a grant for? In my case it was a “small SUV” and I explained that I had sat in or test drove almost every vehicle in that catagory as listed on the Motability website (which I had, I had been researching cars since January) and out of them all, the Ford Puma was the most suitable. The advisor accepted that after a few questions as to why some of the other cars were not suitable and awarded me the amount for the cheapest automatic Puma available (£1895 at the time of ordering).

You can add up to 50% of the awarded grant amount yourself for a different trim level and/or accessories. In my case, I am adding £400 to go up a few trim levels. This needs to be discussed with your grant advisor before ordering as it may effect your grant amount.

It’s worth mentioning that the grants team car catagorys do not 100% match up with the Motability site. When we were discussing small SUV’s the advisor asked if I had considered the Nissan Qashqai, which I hadn’t as that falls under large SUV on Motability’s site.

My advice would be to make sure you’ve researched as many cars as you can and have as much information as possible to back up why you need the specific car that you want a grant for.
