We paid a deposit on our VW Tiguan in 2018. The reason given by the dealer was that as the car was in short supply (yes, even then), they would be charged by VW if they changed the name on the order, this obviously to deter dealers giving priority to certain customers for whatever reason and so darken VW’s reputation which post dieselgate etc wasn’t exactly pristine at the time. True or not, dunno but at least there is some logic there.
