If they want it, they will have it regardless of whether it is plugged in or not.
All manufactures not just a few should be producing fobs that go into sleep mode, or at least owners should be storing them in a metal box effectively mimicking a Faraday cage. Of course none of these are bullet proof should a thief hijack your key when your locking it or they break into your home.
