I’ve just realised I’m just pressing auto button and not air con button should I press both ?
On my Corolla when you press the auto button the air con automatically comes on and also the air con button illuminates, I would imagine your CH-R will be the same.

Been playing with the settings on my Corolla today, the air con can be set to automatically come on when auto is pressed. Use the following buttons, first button real the others virtual.
Set up – Vehicle – Vehicle Customisation – Climate Settings.
Auto a/c comes on the screen and can be toggled on or off, yours may be set to off.
