Impossible to say, some were adjustable between 3.6 and 7kw using dip switches or pin outs on the on-board controller. It will charge just fine at 3.6kw, but will take longer. Its not always just a dip switch change – what thickness and rating is the cable from your Consumer Unit to the unit? And cable to the car if fitted? What rating is the RCBO in the fusebox/standalone CU? 3.6kw @ 16 A vs 7kw @ 32A draw (40A RCBO).

Another issue is does it have a type 1 or type 2 cable & connector or is it untethered? In 2009 most cars used a Type 1 plug, the Kona (and virtually all new cars) is a Type 2. Untethered is no problem as the car comes with a free type 2 to type 2 connector.

If in doubt have a local sparky check your old one out – that should let you know where you stand, its a bit of a minefield as standards have changed as have wiring regs since 2010.

In life, it's not who you know that's important, it's how your wife found out.
