Wrong about the reason for the tunnel which is to get rid of the bottleneck of the short stretch of single carriageway between Countess roundabout and Long Barrow roundabout, along with the similar bit of single carriageway at Yeovilton so the A303 route can be dual carriageway all the way from M3 and joining to M5.
It’s been needed for very many years.
