Brand of EV Charger Installed

I’m new to the Motability scheme and also new to electric cars.  I see that on the Motability page it talks about a free charger.

      1. Is that Motability that’s arranging that, or is it tied to the dealer you order the car with?

      2. Does it apply to PHEV vehicles or just electric only vehicles?

      3. Can I choose my brand of charger, and if I get contacted by an installer, can I politely refuse so that Motability pass me onto a different installer who may then have the one I want?

      Thank you!

Short answer 1) yes 2) no 3) no

1- Motability will pass you details over to Ohme and you will be contacted by a company, who then arrange for the charger to be installed.

2- The charger only applies to EV’s, not PHEV’s

3- The choice of charger in nearly all circumstances, is Ohme branded (Ohme Pro or Ohme E-Pod)

Is there a reason for a particular brand of charger?

Hi thanks for the reply – much appreciated.  Reason for the choice of charger is because of my OCD and wanting an untethered model so I can unplug it and not put up with an ugly coil of wire on the wall.  So I’d had my eyes on the Ohme E-Pod, which seems to be one of the few untethered ones out there.  So from what you’re saying, sounds like I’ll be OK.

          Thanks again!

I have the Ohme epod its the untethered version which i prefered to the tethered, when you fill out the questions and preferences ask for the longer cable (8 meter) it does not cost any extra, you will enjoy the extra length if you have (length anxiety).

Haha not heard of length anxiety just range!  That’s good to know.  To be honest, if I went for the untethered I just assumed I would have to source my own cable, so good to hear it was supplied.

We have the Ohme E-Pod (untethered) using since March 24 linked to the Intelligent Octopus Go tariff. Has been a faultless pairing, just plug in and it smart charges with Octopus control, everything billed at the cheap rate.  ( ‘smart charging’) plus 6 hours at one of the cheapest rates.

My latest latest charge cost me £3.69 for 52.7kwh, really happy with the running costs getting 4 miles per Kw at the moment.

Hi, I’m already with Octopus, but thanks for the reply and useful information.

Thinking of switching to OVO as all VW group cars are currently coming with 30,000 free miles of charge.

Just to update, had my charger installed today and can confirm I was able to pick whether I wanted the tethered or untethered Ohme.   I went for the untethered Ohme (the ePod) for the reasons I said earlier (I didn’t want the cable hanging around).  So massive thumbs up.

I did cheekily ask if they throw in a cable anyway, and they said no.  They did say something vague about maybe the dealer will do that when I pick up my car.  If they mean the huge 200Kw yellow type cables that come with cars, then that won’t be for me for every day use – too heavy – so I’d plan to leave that in the car for the odd occasion when I want to charge on a long trip.

So will probably end up buying a lighter 11Kw cable of my own for the ePod.  Which comes back full circle as the disadvantage of choosing the untethered charger – but that was a risk I was willing to take when I picked it.

Hope this information is of use to someone!
