Hi im new to the forum and value your opinion on the following issue.
We ordered a new mobility car in September (our 2nd car) I received a call from the dealer on wed of last week to say the car was in the country but no delivery date was available yet. I had a call yesterday afternoon to say can I collect today, I explained on the call last week that we were unavailable today and tomorrow due to work commitments. The dealer is applying pressure for me to collect on Friday as it needs to be registered as a 74 plate, I don’t know why? I have explained that again due to work commitments this isn’t possible and Monday would be the soonest. He has said it has to be Friday as he needs it registered?
He has now said all the money has to be paid by Friday?
Am I missing something? Does a car have to be transfered/registered within 3 days?
Can I say no without losing the car?
I’ve looked at the app and it says that I was due to collect today? This was never agreed.
Any helpful information would be appreciated
Thanks

I had this issue with VW a few cars ago. I ordered the car with the expectation that it would be delivered on Sept 1st putting it on a 19 plate but the dealership wanted to register it as an 18 plate but still give it to me on Sept 1st. I told them to go away and cancelled the order.
My new car arrives this week at the dealer and I have arranged to pick it up next week meaning it will be a new 25 plate.
My advice is to stand your ground and tell them that you want the car as a 25 plate or you will cancel the order. They are trying to hit targets is all.
February 27, 2025 at 11:10 am #298482If they have already registered the car as a 74 plate, I would get on the phone to Motability and complain.
I would also ask to speak to the dealer principle and tell him that you are going to cancel the order unless the car is a new 25 plate.
February 27, 2025 at 11:15 am #298485Thanks for you reply. Can the dealer register the car before I’ve signed and given my pin?
February 27, 2025 at 11:22 am #298487Yes they can. As I said, my new car has been given its registration mark already and I don’t pick it up until next Thursday.
If they have already registered the car, I am not sure if they can de-register it so you will either have to accept the 74 plate (which I would not do) or cancel the order and possibly go elsewhere.
Please can I ask what car you have ordered and are you prepared to accept the 74 plate or cancel the car?

The dealership that registered the vehicle can apply to de-register it upto 7 days from the date of original registration:

February 27, 2025 at 12:11 pm #298497There you go @smugandmarried. Tell your dealer to de-register the car as per the post above or else you will cancel the order. They can then re-register it as a 25 plate and you can pick it up next week.
February 27, 2025 at 12:40 pm #298501It sounds like the salesman or dealership want the vehicle added to February sales targets, hence insisting on payment by Friday at the latest!
I would speak with salesmanager and call their bluff by telingl them you are going to cancel, as you have waited this long for the car and its not unreasonable to wait a few more days for the new plate.

February 27, 2025 at 12:45 pm #298503February 27, 2025 at 1:02 pm #298506I’ve just spoken to the dealer and apparently motability fine them if the car isn’t registered in the month it’s received so they have said collect it tomorrow or they will cancel the car and I will have to reorder? As they aren’t will to pay the fine?? Think it’s to do with the new plate etc. My bad luck that it’s arrived so close. I’ve waited since September for this car really dont want to wait another 51/2 months. So looks like I’ve got to have it. Just think for a mobility scheme that deals with people with disabilities its not very helpful to give such short notice and then be threatened with cancellation if you don’t conform to their time frame 😔
February 27, 2025 at 1:04 pm #298507@smugandmarried that is an outright lie. My new car arrives this week (February) but it is being registered as a 25 plate and I already know the registration.
As I said above, VW told me it was to due with WLTP – it is all lies and they just want to meet targets.
Stand your ground!!!
February 27, 2025 at 1:29 pm #298510@kezo surely the dealership should cover the cost of the de-registration?
my mistake, quoted the “registration” fee of £55 and as such edited my post to save confusion, however a new registration fee would still apply.
As in my previous post, there’s more to this, with the dealer insisting on payment by Friday, suggesting they want the car to apply to Feb targets. Registration aside even on a 74plate could still be collected next week if the op was busy but, as it happens confusion also comes into play as the op wants a 25plate.

When did you become aware the dealer had taken deliver of the vehicle?
February 27, 2025 at 1:49 pm #298513Can i ask what make and model vehicle it is and also the dealership???
February 27, 2025 at 2:17 pm #298514I get the point about working and not being available on a particular day but apart from the snob value or to one-up a neighbour what difference does the plate make to us?
Hasn’t this subject already been covered and Motability said they don’t care what the plate is, they just want it delivered to the customer asap 🤔
As for paying £55 to re register it, I’d rather pay for a private plate 😁
I certainly wouldn’t be paying any AP money until I’d inspected it and was due to drive away.
February 27, 2025 at 2:20 pm #298515@kezo my dealer has also asked for full payment this Friday, the car arrives this week but they have no problem registering it as a 25 plate, in fact I know the reg already.
You are very much right in that there is more to this and I believe that the salesman is telling lies.

We don’t specify when a vehicle is registered unless you are having adaptations or a tracker fitted.

February 27, 2025 at 2:45 pm #298520Just got off the phone with motability apparently the car was registered on 18th so got to be transfered this month as a car can’t be registered on a 74 and transfered when it 75. Im more bothered that they are being inflexible on collection as I had said last week I was unavailable. Car wasn’t due to arrive until end of March so I was totally unaware as no updates have been given on progress.
February 27, 2025 at 2:46 pm #298521EDIT: Your update came in while I was typing. Sounds like you’re a bit stuck then.
I do think they have been somewhat obtuse. You could have had the car a few days ago if it was registered on the 18th. The pre delivery inspection and valeting is normally done before the car is registered.
The dealership is having you on and as Kezo says, they’re obviously desperate to achieve either dealer sales targets or the individual salesman’s targets for February (or both)
This exact same thing happened to me last year. They wanted me to collect the car on February 28th on a 73 plate.
I had to escalate the debate to the Sales Manager, who agreed to supply it on March 1st on a 24 plate.
I’m not aware of any fines the dealership has to pay and would suggest it’s a lie.
It’s your call at the end of the day. If you’re the sort of person who doesn’t mind a bit of confrontation and debate, you can hold out for a 25 plate, but your Motability salesman won’t have the authority to do this. You’ll have to put in a call (or visit) the Sales Manager or Dealer Principal.
Option 2 is the easy one. Do nothing, which sees you in your new car next week but on a 74 plate.
Option 3 , you cancel out of principle but have to wait another 5 months for your car, unless there’s some manufacturer stock available.

Exactly, and just what I allude to above

2020 - Volvo XC40 T4 Inscription
2017 - Audi Q3 TFSi Sport S-TronicFebruary 27, 2025 at 2:52 pm #298525I have no idea why they didn’t contact me? Seems underhand to me.
Think 72 dudes has pretty much summed it up.
Really feel like it’s taken the shine off having a new car.
February 27, 2025 at 2:53 pm #298526From Motability We don’t specify when a vehicle is registered unless you are having adaptations or a tracker fitted.
However, from the official dealership side of Motability (many members hereabouts know where to look):
This is repeated every other number plate change, so it is proably what the dealership is following.
February 27, 2025 at 2:56 pm #298527Fair enough, but it is definitely wrong of the dealership to do what they have done, especially considering they registered in on the 18th of Feb.
February 27, 2025 at 3:13 pm #298529They ha e to give you a reasonable time frame ro collect the car, if it was registered on the 18th they should have contacted you before then. It’s not your fault they registered the car, they ahould have contacted you to make sure you could collect in February and if you couldn’t they should have held of registering it unti the 1st
