Driving reassessment

I’ve been told I need to go for a driving reassessment. Basically a driving test. Anyone any experience of this?

I’m not to worried about it tbh as I’m confident in my driving, doing it in the e3008 is more of a concern tbh lol.

Not much info online tbh. The big question is if I do pass will I get my license back like a normal 10 year one? Or will it be like a one year licence and every year I will have to go through this?

      It’s with disability action NI.

It maybe worth informing them n the situation with your car.

“The driving assessment may take place in one of our vehicles, please contact us to discuss vehicle requirements i.e. manual/automatic if you need to use our vehicle.  Assessments can be carried out in your own vehicle if appropriate and your needs can be discussed upon contacting us.”

I’m not certain but I would imagine you’ll get a 1-5 year medical license. I have a medical condition that requires me to reapply for my license every 3 years. I’m currently in the process, they’ve wrote to my specialist at the hospital who I’m sure will reassure them. Good luck with the assessment.

Cheers folks. I reckon I’ll sail through it tbh 😂 one thing I’m unsure off as I done my test 30 years ago in a manual car and was told when stopping at anytime, junctions etc that put in neutral and put handbrake on, clutch bite etc for taking off. What happens in an EV, the same? Put in park then apply handbrake? Is there even a test for EVs or are they classed as automatic cars?

I don’t think you need to put it into park, most EVs will hold the car when you apply the brakes. Either way it’s not a driving test, they’re checking your reactions and safety.

There’s no auto hold in this car. I’m just trying to cover myself so there’s no surprises. My license means everything to me.

Its an assessment to make sure you are safe to drive not a driving test examiner.

Some useful info in the video I posted

I watched it and understand what this assessment is but what is deemed as safe? ie do I need to apply park and handbrake at every stop like you would in a test.

Here’s a good example and one that caused a riot as it ment I was not allowed out of hospital without a fight.

To get out I had to do an assessment which involved me going into a kitchen in the brain injury unit and make a cooked breakfast all while being watched. I made scrambled eggs, toast and tea.

I went in and done it and nailed it, everthing cooked and not burnt lol and when I said I’m done the OT said have I missed something, I said no and we went back and fourth a bit before she told me that I had not turned the cooker off, I did and this went back and fourth again. She then told that I had not turned it off at the main switch on the wall. I told her I’ve never turned it off at the isolation switch and my argument was that I was not programming the clock every morning and that she had no problem with the kettle being left on at the plug switch.

Because of a brain injury and spending so long in hospital that I got very agitated over this. They eventually agreed after two days that I could go home but I need to think about turning it off at the isolation switch.

So I’m just not looking for another situation like this.

What I got from the video was, aslong as your bad habbits, youve picked up over the years dont affect your control and safety of the vehicle, you will be fine mate.

For example, you could show you are in control of the vehicle by switching on auto hold, therefore at a junction the car is safely under control or use the handbrake and put the car into neutral aswell.

Park mode, locks the transmission with a metal pin and is used when the vehicle is parked up after use imo.

Drive how you would normally, there is less chance of you complicating matters. They are looing at control, awareness not a prim and proper driving test!

                        Above all don’t worry 🙂

What puzzles me is what triggered the need for an assessment as I assume you have already been driving as a disabled person.

All I know of assessment centres is back when I became disabled holding a full license for manual cars I was asked to pay £75 upfront for the assessment unless I’d been referred to them by DVLA. DVLA just changed my license from manual cars to automatic only with adaptions and that was that with no assessment needed.

Had as much info about driving in my condition from my local car dealer as I did from the assessment centre but sounds a bit frightening to have something come out of the blue demanding you need an assessment without no cause for concern in ones driving habit.

Its the first time i have heard of a driving reassessment!

But I guess it makes sense, if there are changes to your circumstances. It sounds like its a way to make sure you are compus on the road, and nothing more.

At least its not like having to retake your driving test…that would be a problem. The UK driving test is one of the most difficult in the World.

My mate is a uni  lecturer, from Brazil and had to sit the test. He is a very good driver, but he failed.

He did not try again, living in a city, the force people on to public transport anyway and make city centre driving as difficult as possible.

Some conditions are degenerative and this change over time. This is why they may request a reassessment. I think a lot depends on the condition and what your GP or hospital consultant says when you reapply for your medical driving license. I’ve been awarded a 3 year license twice and I’m currently going through the process.

                                  @Jojoe

That’s more likely Jo as my GP questioned DVLA decision not to reassess my driving ability and they said that nothing had changed in my case and what I made of it it was because my mental state and reaction times had not been affected by my new disability so it was just a case of putting on my license the need for adaption to the cars I drive.

I’m on a 3 year license now but just because of my age, just renewed last month.
