My car went into limp mode, luckily I was close to BP garage. I used my debit card and put on charge for 15 minutes as I was not to far from home. Could not believe when I looked at bank statement and was charged £6.62 for 15 minutes.

Not enough info to know whether this is a scandal or extremely good value for money!
"Come on BYD Seal!"January 22, 2024 at 10:53 am #255956If I was charging at home it would have cost 40 pence max.
January 22, 2024 at 10:54 am #255957How much juice did you get in 15 minutes?

January 22, 2024 at 11:01 am #255960How many kWh is that 5%? Normal rapid pricing is between 50 and 90p per kWh if you’re at the top end of that and got 7/8 kWh it’s not horrendous.
Public charging will always be much more expensive over a timed charge at home.

Thanks for that input Kezo I just spit coffee all over my monitor reading that lol
January 22, 2024 at 12:18 pm #255971If you don’t have a BP Pulse account (or the Motability 3yr subscription for being unable to have a home charger) BP’s prices are about 77p to 83p per kWh.
So at that price you would have gotten around 8kWh or less.
Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!
January 22, 2024 at 12:29 pm #255973There’s a reason a lot of people don’t want an EV. If you can’t charge at home then you’re going to get rinsed.

A good number of people can do very well without a home charger, usually because of charging at work or having destination chargers available for overnight charging near home. However a number of people choose to use rapid chargers, which are the most expensive option, and find themselves paying ridiculous prices. Just by having the right subscription and using the right chargers it does and really can work.

January 22, 2024 at 12:34 pm #255976I personally think that this is only going to get worse once everyone is forced to own one. The government is not going to want to lose the massive amounts of money they make on the taxation of fossil fuels and the only way they will achieve this is if they transfer these taxes onto EV charging.
You will also be at the mercy of the electrical companies who again once they know everyone is a captive audience will to their utmost to maximise their profits

I’m guessing the vast majority of people who don’t have access to home charging don’t have the ability to charge at work and who wants to be leaving a vehicle, possible worth 50k or more at a public charging station all night long where they can’t check the car is safe? Forcing people to do that is just going to make the job of car thieves so much easier when they know that the owner is not able to directly keep an eye on their car.

Current expectations are for a more use based taxation system, where cars are taxed for both where and when they are used. Thus those doing business miles will pay more than gran who drives to Sainsbury’s once a fortnight. This is easily achievable by having a tracking box that reports where and when it’s used on a regular basis.
Either way, nobody on this forum will be paying a road tax unless disability exemptions are cut.
