Hello everyone,
New to the forum, hopefully this is okay.
I would love some imaginative input to finding a new motab car.
key requirements, automatic, large boot (buggy and manual wheelchair), room in back for car seats, light steering and heated seats).
car history:
Ford Fiestas (x2, absolutely loved these but they were too small for equipment, although worked as under 25 back then) bought one at end of lease for how much I loved it. I love powershift, it’s got the perfect hill start and creep. However, steering is very hard on my hands).
Vw Tiguan 1.5 (current). I like this car although it’s a bit boring (colour, style, handling). very comfortable. The DSG is very smooth.
I’ve been clinging onto the Tiguan because I can’t find something similar size or as good with the DSG etc. I didn’t pay the fee for heated seats as I couldn’t afford it and boy have I regretted that.
Open minded to an EV although I do high mileage commute.
I’d rather not have manual dials as my hands aren’t great. Need comfy seats. Tried MG absolutely did not like it. Lane assist was madness!
budget is quite flexible this time apart from add ons. Would prefer good spec (heated seats!!!)

Skoda Enyaq, Hyundai ioniq 5 and 6 and Toyota BZ4X. All electric mind but have decent range.
I ain’t really been looking at ICE cars so know little about what’s hot and not.
Can I add Suzuki Across PHEV (a rebadged Toyota RAV4 PHEV) AP a bit high at £5299 especially when compared to some of the excellent EV now on the scheme.
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally say the wrong thing.
If you are considering a BEV here is some food for thought:
How far and frequent is your commute (there and back)?
Do you have off road parking?
Some info on home charging if you can:
If you do a round journey of 100 miles each day, you need to replace that overnight.
For example: To go 100 miles you will need, give or take, 100 / 3.7kWh (average consumption) = 27kWh. Divide 27/7kW rate of home charger can provide and you need about 4 hours of charge. 4 hours at 7kW is 28, which is a fraction over the 27 you needed. It is a rough example remember.
What you need to also remember is that on Octopus you can get the cost of electric down to 7.5p/kW overnight, so 4 hours charge x 7.5p is 30 pence for that commute.
Public charging costs heck of a lot more, so you would need to avoid that if possible, or don’t worry if work picks up the tab!
If you have your car outside, you can precondition (warm it up or cool it down), which is heavenly and you will never have to go to a stinking petrol station again!!
BEVs can be great fun to drive, the quietness and smoothness are in a different league. Well worth considering if you can home charge I’d say.
There are some great cars out there, I hope you find one that suits your needs.
Skoda Enyaq Race Blue
Take a look at the Tarraco FR Sport. It has everything you’ve asked for as standard. Heat seats front and back. Electric boot with kick activation, and no dials.
It’s £3195 AP but you won’t have to pay for any extras, unless you want a pan roof or tow bar.
I’ve had mine for nearly 3 years now and it’s been excellent.
The Tarraco is a good choice but if you can charge at home then an Enyaq or Ioniq 5 would save you a fortune. Charging at home costs you whatever you can get as a night/off peak tariff, potentially down to well below 5p per mile. Both EVs mentioned have good boot space and decent equipment and will get beyond 200 miles (Enyaq 85/85x).

Definitely need to be able to charge at home for ev, OVO charge 7p a kw for ev charging anytime, but just ev gets the cheap rate.

also thanks for the EV info – we could charge at home as have a drive, although we use a fair bit of energy during the day with washing, wfh, etc. might be a bit tricky to move our usage to night time? Sounds like the ovo system might be better than octopus? If you’ve found it worth it I’d definitely appreciate any thoughts!

I am on Octopus Tracker, todays rate is 12.8 and tomorrow will be 12.1p/kWh. If you can move a substantial amount of your white goods to overnight, Intelligent Octopus is worth looking at. I am at home all day, so use a fair whack of energy through the day and it puts me off changing. Also my mileage is fairly low at around 8k miles a year. As an addition I will say that I have seen the tracker over 20p/kWh this year so it has not been as high as the standard tariff. ?
BUT if you do a lot of miles, you will save so much money when charging at 7.5p/kWh. It has to work for you though and having a driveway, you’re in an ideal position to make the most, esp if Motability fit the charger FOC. It’s always good to have choices.

The ride is comfortable if a little on the hard side. I’ve never got out and thought, bloody hell, I ache. And my back is wired up like a Christmas tree! The seats on the FR Sport are the same on the Excellence Lux, leather and comfortable, not the bucket sport seats on the FR. Never figured that one out!!
Never had a reason to moan about them.

You can always hire an ev for a week an see if it works for you.Do as many test drives as you can with chairs or scooters etc. Using public chargers are extortionate.
Dont put washing machines or tumble dryers on at night and go to bed.
First thing you need to do is consider your driving lifestyle and facilities at home.
For example if you don’t have access to offroad parking and the ability to have a home charger installed or plan to do any amount of long range mileage then I wouldn’t even consider an EV in my personal opinion

It’s always good to have choices.I used to be on Octopus Flux up until October I was averaging around 18p kWh, in November I changed over to Octopus Agile averaging just over 14p kWh, over the last few days Agile has been averaging around zero, Our gas is on Tracker.
