My local dealer Volvo Newcastle had an EX30 for the day as it tours around the country so I thought I’d go along to see it in the flesh and share my thoughts. Bear in mind these are just my personal opinions and you should see the car for yourself if you’re interested in getting one.

The EX30 they had on show was a top of the range Twin Motor Ultra in pale blue. First impressions were that it was a really good looking car, the view from behind is really beautiful. The large wheels pushed right out to the corners of the car give it a really strong stance.

So I really liked the outside of the car, however I then got inside…

The first words that came to mind when I got into the car were basic and cheap. Hard scratchy plastics are everywhere. There is no drivers display at all. The steering wheels a funny shape. The gearstick is on the steering wheel where the windscreen wiper stalk should be ( I don’t know where the wiper controls have moved to). Everything is controlled via the touchscreen, you even have to go through the menus to find the option to open the glovebox.

It feels pretty small in the back, not much leg room. The boot is small. The main reason we wanted to go see the car was to check whether a wheelchair would fit – it doesn’t.

Overall it’s a very pretty car but I couldn’t live with that minimalistic hard plastic interior.

On the way home we called into a Skoda dealership to check out the Enyaq and I loved it but the wife is a bit of a badge snob. I’m sure I’ll wear her down.

I’ve always felt that our XC40 is a pinch on the compact side, so the EX30 purely on size is a no no for me.

Our 3 years are up on our XC40 and we’re looking for a new car but the XE30 definitely isn’t it.

I got a call from Volvo today telling me that they where back in the scheme and If I wanted to choose a new vehicle, I said no – explained the supposed AP where laughable and the service post sales was just as bad.

Plastics aside the thing that would put me off is having to keep touching a screen whilst driving just to enable basic controls

                    Not safe in that respect

Gear lever on the steering wheel is great and love this on my Iconic Etec

                    Nippy enough

Size wise suspect its like the E Tec ( think the Volvo is a bit bigger not 100%) 2 adults 2 under 10 kids would be Ok imo

Different story for some depending on what is intended to be carried in the boot

Mixed bag and a shame as the outside looks the part imo

Having to keep touching the screen would do my head in and as you say not safe!

This cheap plastic (PET) look, seems to be getting more common on mainstream EV’s, to match the supposedly eco credidentials. YUK!

Has anyone heard when Volvo is coming back on scheme? I’ve contacted my local dealer twice they initially said 19th then 23rd but they are now saying they don’t have a date.

There has been months of shifting sands and hearsay. The simple answer is when they appear on the motability search and have an associated order code.

                              Hi Craig,

Volvo are back on the scheme – they have been since this time last week – prices go live on the Motability site tomorrow.

Hi, they definitely aren’t back on the scheme my dealer checked today and they are  unable to place an order on motability systems and they also aren’t showing on the motability website but like you say hopefully this changes tomorrow.

I had 5 new Volvos from 2005 onwards, all except the V60 being fully loaded- an XC 70, an XC90 , two XC60’s and a V60 – the V60 being a Motability car, with the others being on personal leases.

If any of the latest models of these superb cars comes on to the scheme, I would do my best to get one .

I can recommend a Volvo -350,000 plus miles without a problem.

Didn’t Volvo use the the Ford/PSA engine till the end of 2014 & a Geely Volvo developed engine after?

Think Mike is saying how, for him, Volvo is a great manufacturer, no problems across the range of Volvo cars he’s had. Which can help others in narrowing down potential cars.

                                          Just my take on it.

They are definitely available as my local Volvo dealer has been running a big radio advertising campaign for motabillity even listing which ones and I think price.

Does anyone know how some people can order a car when it’s not showing on the motability website. My dealer said each car has a code they input into the motability system and Volvo cars haven’t been allocated a code yet. Only reason im asking as my dealer has 2 XC40 sitting on site and I would like to get my order in asap to secure one.

No one can place an order. As you said the cars have not been allocated order codes.

The prices have been sliding around from the dealership websites for an age.

It is only real when it is on the Motability search. Up until that point it is pointless discussing it. Volvo may rejoin tomorrow, next week, next month or not at all.

We all remember, a few years ago now, Jaguar and Land Rover ran adverts and the prices were released, did they join – No.

We hope Volvo join the Scheme and for longer than the single day when they last joined. Up until that point it’s wasted energy.
