Now that more details of this postponement of the new car cut off have been revealed, I predict that, over time, this change will result in a lot more EVs coming on to Motability and at much more affordable APs than would have been the case had the dates not changed.

The reason I think this is because car manufacturers are still going to have very tough targets to meet about the proportion of cars that they sell that are EVs and if they don’t meet these targets they face ‘fines’ of £15,000 per vehicle! These targets haven’t moved back 5 years.

As has been widely reported, take up of EVs amongst private buyers remains very low, with the overwhelming majority of them going to lease customers due to lower company car taxation. That alone won’t meet the ever increasing targets. One obvious solution would be to push more and more of them towards the Motability market and remove (or lessen) one the biggest barriers to uptake – the currently high APs. That approach alone won’t get them to hit their targets, but every little helps!
