I don’t think this will change many peoples opinions on going EV, those like me who are pro EV will still opt for an electric car and those that are anti will opt for ice. By the time 2035 comes around battery technology will be far more advanced with ranges of over 600 miles, this may then convert some of the anti EV people.

I’m not anti EV, I just can’t run one due to a lack of off street parking for a charge port and local infrastructure (and the cost of charging on public chargers). An EV is not a practical or affordable choice for me right now, that could change in the future but it doesn’t make me anti EV.

Well said Sue. We can be quite blinkered at times on this forum, as most of those who have switched to EVs have off road parking and, in addition, as we are fleet users we don’t have to contend with the high up-front costs or pay for the installation of chargers. Many Motability customers are also low mileage drivers.

The real world is very different. Millions of people don’t have off road parking so would rely 100% on a public charging infrastructure that is not keeping up with demand (the number of EVs on the road per charge point is increasing, not decreasing), may do frequent long journeys, can’t afford the current high costs of EVs (also keeping in mind that there’s a cost of living crisis) etc etc etc

I have no doubt that, in the fullness of time, EV technology and charging infrastructure will all evolve considerably from where we are now. Range will increase massively, the winter degradation issue will lessen, current price premiums for EVs will lessen, charge times will massively reduce, charging infrastructure will improve. However, for every single one of these issues to get to the stage where an EV is an entirely practical solution for everyone is going to take a long time, and certainly beyond 2030, hence the sensible decision to move the dates back.
