Supply of EVs overtakes demand

This may go some way to explaining why most of the additions to the Motability scheme of late have been EVs. Hopefully it may also result in more realistic APs going forward?

“More electric cars are being made than drivers want, one of Britain’s biggest car dealerships has said.

Vertu Motors, which trades under brands including Bristol Street Motors, said supply of new and used electric models is outstripping demand, forcing manufacturers to slash prices in an effort to shift stock.

“Recent increased supply of new electric vehicles appears to be exceeding retail demand,” the company said.

“Manufacturers are reacting to this by discounting prices and offering supported finance rates to stimulate retail demand.”

Elon Musk’s Tesla is among the producers which have cut prices this year in a drastic attempt to boost sales.

Almost two in every five cars produced in the UK so far this year are electric or hybrid, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, up from less than a third between January and July last year.”

The nissan Ariya has seen a £3.5k reduction across the range for the retail market. Some dealers are now offering £2.5k AP contribution or cashback!

Equally the Leaf is seen £1.5k AP contributions at numerous dealers for a while now!

Thats just one mass market manufacturer.

That is quite apparent if you go into a dealership at the moment and ask about stock availability on ev’s . I’ve recently been  into Renault, Kia and Cupra dealerships and all have plenty to choose from  for delivery in September

@Richardw – that’s good to know Richard and I hope that supply over demand results in lower AP’s. We would love to press go on the Kia EV6 AWD but the AP is one of highest(if not the highest) on the scheme.

@SuperJon- We had a test drive in the EV6, great car but quite low on spec being the GT-line and as you say, very expensive.

The BMW i4 appears to be bucking the downturn trend as it is their best selling model. So many Mobility customers have placed orders leading to delivery times now well into the 1st quarter 24.

The Kia EV6 was on the short list but the AP was just too high for us. Would be good to see the AP’s dropping on EV’s on the last quarter. Still too high for many.

If by some miracle the bmw i4 comes down in price(surprised still om the list),does it effect build slot place and delivery times if new order placed with the lower AP?

As I understand it, a set amount of build slots are allocated to each dealer outlet, once they have been filled the dealer has to wait until BMW make more available. So 1st come 1st served on the slots.

BMW have announced they are upping production by 5% in 2024 due to i4 demand. Hope that the i4 stays on as many Mobility people are not in a position to order yet.

Hopefully both bmw/motability see the amount of orders the i4 has been getting and think about adding the ix1/3

also would like to see more q4 trims added and maybe a deducted ap like how the id4/5 went down

Your point is proven by my experience recently. We ordered the megane on the 13th of August and we pick it up tomorrow morning. 2 and a half weeks from order to collection… so quick that we haven’t even got the home charger installed yet!

Why do you think the i4 is the best selling?

Do you have access to motability orders?

The car doesn’t even appear in best monthly uk sales set out by automotive sales data.

All car manufacturers are increasing production as the chip shortage and wiring shortages are easing.

It shouldn’t do Paul. The Motability cancellation is administrative only and doesn’t affect the order with the manufacturer, in this case BMW.

The salesman then inputs the new order onto his system with the lower AP.

I’ve read the threads and I’m very encouraged regarding delivery dates, I ordered a Nissan ariya and was told by my motability specialist that delivery would be January, do you guys think that’s just because the ariya is very popular or do you think I may get one sooner?

The i4 is BMW’s best selling EV car so it has been reported from BMW Germany where the UK’s are produced.

Upping the production by 5% with more staff. The BMW EV market is expanding quickly. Looking forward to this as our next car.

The Ariya is a popular car, which also happens to be made in Japan, which can add to the delivery time. 🙂
