Two years extension every time.

Nothing on the scheme that fit’s your needs? An extension could be the answer.

What are the criteria for an extension on motability? The answer appears to be a bit fluid, is it the amount of the AP paid for the car or is it the number of miles on the clock, nobody seems to know the actual rules.

If you have decided to extend, and motability have agreed to it, what do you go for? One year or two. Well this is a no brainer there is no reason to agree to anything other than a two year extension, why? Because you can choose a new car at any time within the two years. If you choose one year, and you don’t see anything suitable on the scheme within that year, you cannot extend any further and you must pick a car on the scheme or leave.

At present we are seeing massive problems with regard to availability of cars on the scheme. This is unlikely to change this year so a one year extension would probably leave you in a similar position as the one you are in now. Next year will probably bring far more choice so to my mind if your three year contract is up now/or soon, and there’s nothing on the scheme to suit, contact motability and ask for a two year extension. In my mind its the only obvious choice.

If your going to extend, then the only option is 2 years. There a few who took 12 months and regretted down the line.

I ask motability for an extention on my car. The lady asked me how long do you want your car extended Sir?

I replied, oh a metre should be perfect!.

I have a Ford S-Max in April 2017, around the time I was due to renew Covid happened and found myself working from home a lot, the car suits my needs so I rang Motability to talk about extending for one year, they asked me the mileage and reason for extending and they were really good about it and totally understood, fast forward one year… I again rang Motability to ask what the possibility of extending for another year but totally prepared if they said no. I explained I was still WFH and not done a huge amount of mileage and the car still suited my needs and if I was going to get another car it would probably be another S-Max, which at the time was £3,500 approx.

Motability were again really good, the lady on the call put me on hold for a few minutes to come back and say yes I could extend for another year but I couldn’t extend beyond five years. I happy!

About 3 weeks ago I placed an order for another S-Max (didn’t want a Galaxy, didn’t want to look like a taxi!) but due to delays, which everyone knows about, the car should be available to me in about October ’22. My current car has been extended until I get my new car.

All said and done, I’m happy the way I have been treated over the 25 years with Motability. The number of cars and type of cars is concerning and not sure what I’d have done if the S-Max was no longer available…

Chris that’s good to hear but goes some way to highlight the need for the extension rules to be written down on the motability website. The problem with allowing some to do what others are denied is that it opens the company up to unwanted scrutiny. Someone reading this who has been denied a further extension to their initial one year extension will be wondering why, and rightly so.

We can of course complain about rules  but rules should be rules if they are applied to some, and not others, I think it’s reasonable to complain and at the very least ask why.

was that length, width or height?.?

I have a two year extension on the Tiguan, because of Covid, AP’s , delivery times and trim changes , especially for the ID3 and 4 , Etc etc and a lesser choice than previously , in June last year, and I then ordered a new VW  a few weeks later , but have since cancelled and will continue to enjoy the Tiguan for as long as possible, because there is not much choice , for me anyway?

What if you’ve extended already and your 5 years is coming up and nothing is suitable or is affordable. luckily for me i ordered before covid and my car was sitting at the dealers during the 1st lockdown in 2020 and didn’t get it till late june.

Personally I think MBO make more if you extend the lease unless you doing 20k a year and would hit 100k over the 5 years. In that case they may say no, but if your mileage is average or lower than average they on a win win.

So for me I would only extend as a last option and would consider a trade off maybe as you paying in most cases the same amount for a 3 year old car as for a new one, if you paid a high ap to start with then it makes sense to extend but if you have not then imo it doesn’t.

Tuff times though for the scheme and choices and i feel sorry for many having to make hard choice’s right now or waiting well over the 3 months for delivery after ordering and not knowing when that new car will arrive, or those that have had orders cancelled altogether.

I am 4.5yrs plus in my lease and was told I couldn’t keep longer than 5yrs. My only problem and why I wouldn’t extend again, is if you keep it for full 2yrs extension you only get £250 additional GCB. Or in my case because my new vehicle will arrive next month I will only get an additional £100 GCB rather than on a pro rata basis, which I was expecting. Yet you still have to pay your full award to MB during the extended lease.

So from my personal view it’s not cost effective and a big no no.

Interesting reading from Motability about extension and under normal times it seems they would only grant a two year extensions if your car is fitted with adaptions else wise its one year if under 15,000 miles at three years.

There is nothing about how much you pay in AP so must be at the discretion of Motability. Of course there making exception at the moment.

Some of the wording from MB for one year extension…

If you’ve driven your car fewer than 15,000 miles at the end of your agreement, you might be able to keep it for an extra one or two years.

You can ask us for a lease extension if you’re within the last three months of your current lease and you haven’t already applied for your next car – just go to ‘Current lease’ in your account.

                        Wording for two year extension…

If you have certain adaptations fitted to your car, like hoists, swivel seats, rooftop hoists and electronic accelerators, you might be able to extend your lease for up to two years.

You’ll need to talk to us to see if you’re eligible

Wording if your on a short DWP award…

If your allowance is due to end during your next lease and you have less than 12 months remaining when it’s time to apply, you’ll need to extend your lease until you have your new award confirmed.

If this matches your situation, call us on

                        PS

just noticed it says under one year and 15,000 keep it for an extra one or two years.?

Chris we had driven about 40,000 miles in our XC60, we had no adaptations. I called them and they offered a 1 or 2 year extension. I took 2 years as its a no brainer.

We extended as we loved the car, nothing to do with finacial considerations.

If you can get the car you want on the scheme then extending, obviously, has no advantages, but at this time there are few cars on the scheme so if there is nothing that is suitable for you, and you like your current car, then extend and take the 2 year option if available.

We are more than happy with our Outlander PHEV we are not due to change until July 2023, however we have already decided we would be better off extending our lease for a further 2 years, to replace our current Outlander PHEV with another suitable PHEV would attract an AP at the current rate of £4,000 plus in our case another £600 – £700 for a towbar. We have made the decision to spend that money on some solar panels, and see what 2025 brings ?

Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally say the wrong thing.

I intend to go for the 2 year extension on my next car with it’s £3,200 AP plus another £1,100 for adaptions.

That said I’ve extended my current car due to the comings and goings of cars at the moment and fell into the 1 year extension trap but now I know next time and next time is more important with the inflated prices going around now, unless of course the AP and adaptions go back to being reasonable by the Autumn of 2025.

What’s the saying “once bitten twice shy”. ?
