      Hi

We are collecting our first Motability car this week. I wanted to pay the advance payment by credit card but the dealer is saying the only option is a bank transfer. He said a credit card isn’t cleared funds. Is this correct?

I would be very grateful for any assistance anyone could offer.

      Thanks

Thanks Matt. How did you get them to accept it? I’ve been given a definite no!

We have paid the last 2  advance payment on our cars with a credit card at 2 different dealerships/manufacturers

                No problem with either

Thanks file28…….they are adamant that this is not an option. There was no mention of this when I placed the order. As it’s our first car I was unsure if this was the norm……obviously not!

When I wanted to pay via CC I was told I would need to pay in full three days before the car was to be delivered. Opted to pay with Debit Card on the day.

I used to pay cash, now most don’t accept that either although with my last car which i picked up in june you could pay with a card but only up to a certain amount £1k if i remember which the ap was over so i paid BT.

Luckily i usually plan for the next car so had the funds in my account, but in your case it being the first car on the scheme sometimes that could be an issue to get together.

You may have to call their bluff and say that you cannot do it as you do not have the funds and that’s why you want to use a cc. I’m assuming that might be the case as often the ap can be quite a sum of money

It might be just you want to gain some reward points or like me take advantage of 0% over two years.

Really it don’t matter all that really matter is what you thinks best for you and are they going to lose the sale over it. I doubt it, but they could do if it is company policy. I guess it depends if you have the ap available or not. If you don’t then you cannot pay the ap.

The other issue might be that as some have said it’s not cleared and the ap they taking is on the behalf of motability.

Thanks for such a comprehensive reply rox.

The AP is £2199 so was hoping to spread the cost over a couple of months. I do have the funds saved but would prefer not to use them if possible. I suppose I should have asked but it’s all quite overwhelming the first time round. I feel stupid I didn’t think to do so!

just say you will cancel the car and go to a dealer that will take credit card .you can cancel any time before you put your pin in

They do take credit card, my dealer asked for transfer I said no I had the cash and I don’t use my debit card at all. I don’t because more protected with credit card and don’t even know where it is. As my AP was below 2/3 I could pay credit card. Personally I would tell them sorry it’s credit card or I’ll cancel and pay elsewhere and see how quickly they change their mind.

Just looked back at the paperwork I was given at the time of ordering and the T&C’s spell out what the dealer will accept. CC payments need to be made 3 days before delivery to allow funds to clear, cash up to £1000, Bank Transfer 3 days before delivery, Debit card on the day, but they will insist on checking the funds have cleared before handover.

It might be a good idea to check the paperwork first.

                                  That’s great advice….thank you 😉

I’m usually pretty astute but I’ve found doing this for the first time quite bemusing at times.
