April 2, 2026 at 10:46 am in reply to: Motability Compulsory Black Box – BBC N01 viewed News Article Today #350506It’s been a bit frustrating @BigDave as deciding on the M60i has resulted in a much longer wait. Apparently, because it has a BMW M division engine (and probably also because it’s right hand drive, whereas 99% of V8s will be left hand drive), BMW Munich have to ‘slot’ it in to the regular production run. This has given me a build date in June and a delivery date of the last week of July. Conversely, we are about to go and view today the 40d that is in our exact spec (which they configured for me before I decided on which engine to go for) as it was already in their order schedule but could still be reconfigured. So annoyingly, if I’d decided on the 40d I’d be taking delivery this week! Interesting about your delaying registration. I said to the dealer that if it was going to take until August I would want to delay registration until 1st Sep to get the 76 plate, but they are saying that they have a strict policy that you have to take delivery within 10 days. I haven’t gone into battle on that (yet) as they have been brilliant and I am still hoping that my build date may move forward.
I can understand your frustration @glos-guy !
However, as you said back when, the petrol model suits your usage better than the 40d diesel would.
Just don’t be tempted when you see the 40d in the flesh today, unless you are absolutely certain it is right for you. It is a princely sum to be spending on something you might regret later.
Re storing the vehicle, they were/are happy to do this on the proviso that it didn’t span either their quarterly sales period (which coincidentally runs to the same quarterly dates as the Motability scheme) or a registration plate change. I presume this is for accountancy reasons.
April 2, 2026 at 9:34 am in reply to: Motability Compulsory Black Box – BBC N01 viewed News Article Today #350491Oh dear. Our new private car can’t come soon enough. I’m done with all this anti-Motability hatred and the stigma of having a Motability car
Have you got a build or delivery date for your X5 yet?
My X6 is due to arrive at the dealership on a transporter today.
Albeit, as agreed, they are not registering/pdi’ing it yet as I don’t want to collect it until I get back from the USA towards the end of next month (No point in having it sat taxed and insured in one of the farm sheds for six weeks)! It might as well be stored it their compound untaxed and at the dealership’s risk should anything untoward occur. I have the Grenadier to truck around in so there is no rush – great things are worth waiting for!
April 2, 2026 at 8:27 am in reply to: Motability Compulsory Black Box – BBC N01 viewed News Article Today #350482Thankfully the BBC haven’t enabled comments for this article, as I don’t think we’d like the responses. If they were to mirror the sort of anti- Motability comments of every other article over this past year, it would be very depressing reading.
It is bad enough across social media where this BBC item has been mentioned/posted.
Sadly, (and as probably expected) most of the responses have been very pro having these black boxes fitted to Motability vehicles and people losing their vehicles due to this technology.
It certainly does make very depressing reading.
It may have been better if the BBC had not highlighted this issue so prominently as it seems to have set the ‘baying anti-Motability mob’ off again which both the Government and Motability seem to bow to!

Whilst I am not into conspiracy theories, all these changes to the scheme does make me wonder exactly what Motability conceded to the Government during and following the press and social media vilification mid to late last year.
As well as what has been published already (VAT on AP’s and IPT, as well as subsequent mileage reductions, black boxes, tyres on ration etc), I wonder if Motability actually agreed to reduce their customer numbers.
Someone above mentioned the forthcoming Timms review and the prospect of people becoming disenfranchised from using the scheme, If so, the Government will be seen as the villain of the piece amongst the disabled community and organisations.
Or did, amongst the VAT implementation talks, Motability also agree to reduce customer numbers as a proxy for the Government? I.e. the Government tells Motability to reduce customer numbers both to appease ‘the mob’ and not leave the Government with the flak, else the Government would fully tax vehicles etc, or even ‘shine a torch’ into the scheme (either another Public Accounts Select Committee or a Competition & Markers Authority Inquiry etc) with the subsequent bad press about Motability salaries etc.
The easiest (and most surreptitious) way for Motability to reduce customer numbers would be to price a percentage of customers off Motability. Motability then gets the flak from customers instead of the Government. The Government can later claim credit to the ‘mob’ for reducing the numbers using Motability.
Unfortunately, we will probably never find out. No doubt an FOI request to the Government for such information would come back with the usual ‘commercially confidential’ response for not releasing such information. We will probably only find out in thirty years when the papers are released. Unless like the Mull of Kintyre Chinook crash papers they are going to be locked away for a century as they may cause embarrassment for the Government.
Overall, I have come to the conclusion that there is nothing Motability would stoop to in order to ‘save it’s skin’ and protect itself and its very comfortable staff t&c’s. If that includes some dodgy dealings with the Government to help the Government do their dirty work, nothing is off the table. Also, what else might Motability have agreed with the Government that has not come to light yet?
I do feel genuinely worried for those folks who do not have either the means, credit rating or confidence to jump ship from Motability in order to meet their mobility needs.

It rather makes one nostalgic for the heady days back when we had:

available on the scheme – Q3 2007 if you are interested.
Then came 2011 and the first butchery of the scheme!
Are we currently witnessing the second?

April 1, 2026 at 12:56 pm in reply to: Advance payment went DOWN – Motability say tough luck! #350390BigDave – i mentioned this as i’m sure BMW did this for us 2 leases ago, this dealer said that since they only sell pre reg cars and any new is a motability order they cant do anything with it. Not overly fussed this time round. Just a waiting game for car to be delivered now. cheers for reply!
As I said in my post above, it is at the sole discretion of the dealership if they will adjust the AP, either without prompt or if the customer asks.
Otherwise it is as per the scheme rules i.e. the AP is rigidly fixed at the time of your order.
Your BMW dealer was obviously more ameniable than your current one!
April 1, 2026 at 12:48 pm in reply to: Advance payment went DOWN – Motability say tough luck! #350386Dealer said the same! – we can cancel and reorder, but would go to back of queue again. Not worth if for £250 – ordered 5-6 weeks ago. Arnold Clark – Vauxhall
Technically, both Motability and the dealership are correct according to the scheme rules. The AP is fixed at the time of order, regardless of any subsequent price movement.
However, if the AP does go down, some dealers, at their discretion, may cancel the Motability side of the order, then re-order at the new AP, leaving the manufacturer order still in place so you remain in the same place in the build queue. It takes the dealer about 5 minutes to do, but it is at their discretion.
You also have the option to cancel and go elsewhere to reorder at the new AP, but it would put you further back in the build queue.
It seems as though your dealership is rigidly affixed to the scheme rules!
