karen j<p style=”text-align: left;”>Hiya, I’m ordering my first motability car and would very much like a 4×4 comfortable seat very economical car preferably with leather heated seats. Like a lot of us comfort is the number one priority on any car I get, followed by low running cost. Which is a big ask I know. I’m looking at the mitsubishi Outlander but have heard good reviews of the Hyundai Kona and the Honda CRV.</p>
Am test driving a mitsubishi outlander dynamic tomorrow as the AP looks reasonable for what you get. Any thoughts or inputs welcomed, have I missed a vehicle and model which you think I should consider?
Really excellent forum btw thank you it’s helped me a lot already working out the scheme and how to get the best out of it. This car will really give me a new lease of life so it’s an important decision.

Karen, a PHEV is only economical if you can recharge it at home overnight every time you use it, and do mostly journeys under 50 or 60 miles. We are looking seriously at the Volvo XC40 T5 hybrid but it’s not 4 wheel drive.

karen jThanks Wigwam, yes most journeys will be 20 miles or less as I can’t stay in the car too long. Probably once a month there’s maybe a 100 mile round trip but everything else is short. The Volvo looks lovely, I’ll check that out , I’m very rural and we can get cut off in snow which is why I think a 4 x 4 but that’s not essential. I tend not to want to be out in that sort of weather anyway. The Volvo being sturdy I think could be a good option. I did consider full electric but it’s perhaps a push too far at the moment. Maybe next time.
April 25, 2021 at 2:56 pm #146535In most ways, full electric would be ideal with your mileage especially if you have a drive. You’d be looking at less than 4p a mile to run.
size wise though, the Kona is s as lot smaller than the XC40, driven both, I’d say the seats were equally comfortable and they’re fully electric, heated and cooled if wanted plus heated steering wheel and far cheaper than the Volvo in AP and running. Volvo does definitely win out though in the feeling of luxury, the Kona has everything as standard, but does feel a bit plasticky inside.
There’s also the Ford Kuga PHEV, had lots of problems with the battery initially, but I think that’s now been sorted
worst thing on the PHEV’s is the massive AP’s
id suggest trying them all if you can

TimHi Karen,
I’m not sure if you’ve seen the forum chatter today regarding the new Kona EV pricing… It’s now £399 for the ultimate trim version. 64kWh battery and a top specification list. Well worth considering if it was on your shortlist.

£499 but still a bargain

karen jYes 🙂 I hadn’t considered it before and it was that thread that made me think I might have missed a good deal ! It’s definitely on the list to try out.

We have the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV like you we are the ideal user, however Wigwam is correct, if we did not tow a caravan we would have gone for a full EV, the new Kona Ultimate is a steal.
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.

karen jBlimey. Just had a test drive in the outlander. That is a very nice car indeed.
April 26, 2021 at 1:40 pm #146645
RichardI did the maths & because we occasionally need more seats & to tow it works out the best value to keep the old car for holidays towing & 7 seats & use an EV the rest of the time.
Car insurance is now £200 a year, road tax remains free as EVs are exempt so for low mileage it’s actually the better option for us.
The Outlander is probably the best option if you don’t have that 7 seat requirement. I did have test drives booked before covid on one as really like the idea & look before I decided to commit to the eV.
Whatever you decide I’m sure you’ll love what you get

BrokenBulldogJust ordered our third Mitsubishi Outlander last week, excellent value with both Phev and 4×4, well kitted out, easy and comfortable drive new engines even better all though it’s starting to look a bit dated now. Just a word of warning I was told the stocks are being snapped up!

ajnmitsubishi Outlander Great choice, good too have on a short list I think..
April 26, 2021 at 2:33 pm #146661
karen jThanks Tim and AJN. I think it’s the one. If there’s any available. I’m struggling to find a topic on the ordering process. The chap at the dealer filled out a load of forms while I was there and created a motability account for me. The account now says new vehicle application in progress. Now I’ve not actually ordered it, as it happens I think I will but is this normal?
April 26, 2021 at 2:36 pm #146663
karen jI saw your other post on this. Like you I’m keeping my old car, to mainly ferry my dogs around in in or for when we need extra seats as I don’t want to sully a new car with dog paws. There’s so a possibility of towing in the future, potentially, so I think on balance the outlander, if there’s any left (:-)) will be the one.
April 26, 2021 at 2:48 pm #146666
ajn@Karenj it’s the first time for me also, we went for a Volvo..
As for all the forms I wouldn’t have an answer for you as we knew we wanted that car, so ended up doing the yeah – sure thanks sort of stuff?
However this is the place to find out this stuff, it’s a great source of info ?
?
April 26, 2021 at 2:55 pm #146667We have had the Outlander PHEV for 10 months now AP£1699 for the Design, I believe that has dropped to £999.
We tow a 1500 kg caravan over the last 10 month including towing we have covered 4846 miles our totally running cost to date £334.58 which if my records are correct works out to 129 mpg
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.

karen j@brokenbulldog, which model did you order? Did they give you a lead time? I’m being offered 3 colours in the dynamic model and a possible 2 week delivery. Am just happy there’s any left.
April 27, 2021 at 6:38 pm #146797
karen jThat’s incredible @oscarmax. Have to say I think I’m sold on the mitsubishi. Had a look at the Kona and it’s lovely but I think on the small side for our tall kids. Think I’ll order tomorrow. It’ll break me into charging and working out how that all works ready for probably a full EV next time.

TimIs it the case that free home chargers are only available with pure ev on the scheme?

karen jAll ordered. Atlantic grey mitsubishi outlander dynamic it is 🙂 . What a psychological boost that ‘this ‘ has finally given me something good to think about rather than continually taking.
April 28, 2021 at 9:06 am #146829Have a look at the Green Car Guide they have carried a long term test on the 2019 2.4 version, expect around 38 mpg on the motorway in pure petrol model if the batteries have completely depleted, taking in to account petrol/diesel prices is compares to 40mpg.

karen jThat’ll be fine @oscarmax. 90% of my use will be within the battery or with a charger at the destination. The odd time I do longer I can allow for as offset against the incredible comfort the car gave in its seats. 100 mile round trip to see one if my daughter’s occasionally but mum and other friends are 300 to 400 miles away. The journey (when allowed again) would have been made far too long with charging in the middle for a pure electric. (Its akready days of planning before and after to cope with it) Maybe in 3 years the charging speed and numbers will have increased enough. Am excited now. 🙂

BrokenBulldog@karen j I ordered the dynamic safety, we want the pearlescent white which we have now but it’s sold out, we were offered diamond red at extra cost, silver and frost white, I went outside to see the silver on a second hand car and decided on that but by the time the order was being processed that had gone so we ended up with the frost white.

BrokenBulldogGreat choice Karen in that colour! I honestly think you’ll be very happy with it. We’ve loved ours.
