When did doctors stop doctoring?

The wife needs blood transfusions every now and again, she hasn’t been too good recently so we went to the doctor to have a chat. The doctor checked her out and said she wanted to get a blood test ASAP. She phoned through to reception to see if the nurse was available to take bloods but she was busy all afternoon. The doc said we would need to go to the health centre and see if they could fit us in but if they couldn’t to call back the next day to see if they can organise bloods to be taken. I said to the doctor “can you not take her bloods” “no” she said “ I don’t take bloods”. We managed to get bloods taken at the medical centre the next day but its a terrible situation when a doctor can’t take blood.

It wouldn’t have taken 3 minutes for them to take the blood. Mrs Joe was in hospital earlier this year when a doctor saw the nurse was struggling to get a vein, he immediately jumped in and did it himself.

I’m old enough to remember the days the doctor would visit you at home, even in the night and it wasn’t a locum it was one of the doctors based at the practice who was scheduled to do call outs.

It’s about time, theirs not ours.  The appointment is only for a set number of minutes, anything that doesn’t fit in that time needs doing elsewhere.  It gets more people infront of the doctors but doesn’t get anyone sorted in one visit.

Our GP has an online firm to fill in, that gets triaged by a nurse who never sees people.  There are plenty of cases where they will send cases to minor injury units or out of hours doctors (in hours) as that’s the only way to be seen.

I’ve swelling in my leg which is the same one as had DVT last year.  They sent me to minors, a 3 hour wait just to be told I shouldn’t be there and it’s a fluid build up.  I then had to fill in the same form to try and get to see a GP.  Apparently it’s all a symptom of the pressures they’re under but something has definitely broken.

Same at my surgery, they changed my diabetic injection so had to get bloods done straight away, first appointment got cancelled as no nurse, second one I turned up and no nurse.  I asked if there was anyone else who could do it, like a doctor? told they were all busy?  Surgery was completely empty apart from me!.

Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!

The receptionist takes the blood in our practice.

We have eight doctors in our surgery looking after over 9,000 patients. All of them are woman and six of them job share, three days one week two days the next,  in fact there is not a man in the surgery, the nurses, pharmacist and receptionists are all woman.

When booking an appointment with any doctor, not necessarily the one you want or who has been dealing with you previously it takes at least two weeks to see them. When you go into the surgery for your appointment there’s maybe three people in the waiting area with four receptionists.  Not Happy 😩

I remember questioning the lack of male doctors at our practice, the nurse said they struggled to get male GP’s. The practice is part of a large company  with multiple practices, if you want a male GP they’ll make you an appointment at another practice.

I’ve been told the same but the problem is that unless one of the two full time doctors leave the new doctor would have to agree to a part-time position which doesn’t really suit men so they don’t apply.

Even though thr wife has been in quite a lot of pain she went to the Drs to make an appointment only to be told sorry they are all taken and was told to ring at 8am to try and book one

Rang 2 mornings on the trot at 8am kept in a queue then eventually told sorry all gone

In desperation I filled in an online surgery consultation request form ( mouth full lol )

Waited 3 days for a reply only to be informed that someone will ring between 8/12 in 18 days time

                      Says it all

Suspect we need dedicated GPs/Consultants that do not have one foot in the private sector

Ours is similar in that you have to ring at 8am. But we rarely don’t get a same day appointment, even when we’ve been 29th in the queue, never heard it get higher than 29. You can also prebook for a week ahead, I’d do that if you are able and try again each day. If you get an appointment you can cancel the pre booked one.
