What would need to change for you to go EV?

We get a number of comments from members indicating they would like to go EV “but”.

So maybe those on the scheme, with EVs, can answer those who would like to change ” but”

The two frequently voiced reasons are “range anxiety” and “charging”. “Range anxiety” IMO is far less of a problem than it was even a year ago. Most BEVs will give in excess of 200 miles on a full battery and some on the scheme give over 300 miles.

Charging falls into two categories, those with home chargers and those without. If you have a home charger going full BEV is a no brainer the money saved is huge, possibly running into £thousands over the three years. Those without home chargers need to do a bit more planning but with chargers springing up in car parks, railway stations and all the main food stores rolling out chargers all over the country charging away from home is getting much easier.

The government is changing the grant rules from 1st April next year, to make it easier to get kerbside chargers for those with no off street parking. So those in flats etc should be able to get a charger fitted near where they stay.

What about the “petrol heads” what would make them change? Is it the smell of petrol or roar of the engine or the 0-60 of the car?

Within the next decade we will all be driving EVs, but what would make you change now?

I would just love a EV that could safely tow 1500kg 200 miles on a charge, several non disabled caravaners unhitch their caravans on the motorway services and charge up on route.

Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.

I would need to carry 5 persons plus room for a fully assembled pavement scooter and hoist and at least 250 mile range with the heater on.

Oh forgot to say, an AP no more than £3,000

Ease of fitting charger (I have not yet investigated this), a better range and more chargers that are working!

actually brydo, the way things are going i will possibly never go ev, reason i am doing less and less miles, i will probably come off the scheme at the end of this lease and get a 2nd hand jimny or something for less than a couple of grand and run it till it gets banned.

this lease will probably fail to hit 5k over the 3 years, not worth the £70 a week it costs.

Nothing – I have an EV on order and can not wait. Home charging installation is in progress and a 200 mile range is more than enough for me, it should get me to Tesco’s and back! The idea of having a car charged up and ready to go each morning really appeals.

What sort of range do people think they need? And what sort of sacrifice are they prepared to make to achieve it?

Another 2 years lease left on our first ever motability car,  so swap my 2ltr B4 for the xc40 model Wigwam has  petrol/electric (not sure what it’s called)..

So a straight swap will do, hopefully in the interest of the environment, I’ll wait for you call Volvo?..?

I’m really wanting to go EV, we have a driveway so charging not a problem. Big issue is the range, we do Cornwall 4/5 times a year from the Northwest (370 miles). I hate stopping on the way back, I’ll move to EV when we get a range of 450.

Have you thought about moving JoJoe?!! I don’t think my ICE car could do that journey in one hit, and I know my arse and bladder couldn’t!! Totally epic but I am with you on just wanting to get there.

I’ve got just less than 9 months to make a decision on my next car. I would like to go EV as I find them interesting. I’m not against ICE at all but there’s just nothing out there that really interests me at the moment (not just on the scheme but on the market in general).
I don’t do a lot of miles and the current range on EV’s would probably suit me. The ID3 was top of my list but it’s not on the scheme at the moment. Plus I’ve heard some bad reviews.

I’d like to only have to charge once a week (once a fortnight would be better) and I’d have to be able to charge from home. I have a driveway so I hope that won’t be a problem.

I know people talk about making compromises but I don’t think you should have to compromise just to go electric.
Everyone has a car to make their lives easier and making compromises would make your life more difficult. It might not be a lot more difficult but for me, that’s not progress.

EV’s have a long way to go and I believe in the future they’ll be better than ICE cars have ever been unless another form technology is invented which is better than electric

I could be tempted by the P8 electric next time around if it was cheap enough and had a guaranteed winter range of 200 miles.

For me, two key factors. A range of about 300 miles and the ability to charge at home.

I took the leap of Ev faith 2 years ago and I am glad I have.

That said I am in a lucky position that I can charge at home and that 95% of my trips are within range of the car. I’ve just tipped over 37000 miles and have saved £1000s in fuel.

Dislikes are the car is a bit small, I have struggled on a few occasions to find charging spots when I am away from home and the car isn’t that comfortable on longer journeys.

When it goes I will go Ev again but a bit bigger and a longer range needed.

The main issue is price. Be it AP on Motability, or purchase price if buying privately. I could not see my fuel savings ever repaying the upfront costs.

I make frequent trips to Addenbrooke’s hospital in Cambridge from West Yorkshire. It’s a 335 mile round trip.

Ideally I’d drive down park up using one of the charge points at the hospital whilst I’m in hospital for a few hours then drive home.

But every time I travel down, there has never been a vacant charger.

The last thing I went to do after a 3hr+ drive and 3hr+ sat around a hospital is to set off home only to park up at the services and wait for my vehicle to charge up.

This would be even worse at this time of year when the cold weather affects battery and charging performance. This added to the potential of LONG delays on the A1, especially if there’s been an accident. Although I’d hope having the heater on whilst sat stationary in a traffic jam wouldn’t drain the battery too much, I’d be more concerned that many EV drivers would take the opportunity to leave the A1 at the nearest services to charge their vehicles rather than sat in a traffic jam. Currently there’s not enough chargers to cope with an influx of vehicles during this scenario (a scenario which I believe is not at all far fetched)

If I won an EV, I would only use it for journeys that were in range, with a large safety gap. For the last 2 years, I have only been inside hospitals, my own home, my family’s gardens and very quick in-and -out trips to a few places like Toolstation, or using a toilet. I do not want to be waiting around inside places while my EV charges.

I will of course, purchase/lease an EV when things improve (chargers and their speed) AND they are affordable.

I haven’t even considered an ev because I have to park on street and there’s no guarantee I could park outside my own house. If I did park outside then I would need a cable going from the house to car which is about to 15 ft. I also live in an area where you have nice things they either get stolen or damaged. So unless I move home with a drive I won’t consider it. I’ve only got to feb on a 5 year lease as I extended it and I’m struggling to find a car suitable hoping Q1 22 has some of the cars that were took off the scheme

So we have range, charging and cost.

                                                    Range,

Driving over 200 miles without a break is IMO unsafe but there are those who clearly do it. Cars with a range of 450 miles on a single charge are few and far between.  If any do arrive on the scheme, (very unlikely) within the next three years the AP will be sky high. So paying through the nose rather than stopping for an hour to get a bit to eat and recharge seems like a very acceptable compromise on the very few times you need to do it.

                                                    Charging

there are those like Laura above who are in difficult locations and will struggle to go full BEV until there are many more more chargers available. However it is doable for her, and anyone else to charge away from home. A quick search on ZapMap https://www.zap-map.com/live/ will more than likely reveal a number of charging points in your area, also if you work there are grants coming in April next year to encourage employers to install chargers.

What i would like to see is dedicated disabled parking with a charger outside disabled drivers houses, ensuring they can charge and get a dedicated parking space.

                                                    Cost

EVs are more expensive than ICE cars at this point in time and its likey to stay that way for three years or so but by 2025 the cost of EVs are predicted to go down by 25%. If this is the case the Motability scheme will be a whole lot cheaper. Thats the future though, right now it could be much cheaper over the three year period depending on your mileage and whether or not you can charge at home. There have been numerous posts as to how much cheaper it is to run an EV compared to an ICE car.
