Hi,
I’ve had my Tiguan since 29th November 2021 so just over a year, in this year it has developed an annoying fault of the travel assist not currently working and orange triangle showing on the display.
It pings between 30-50 times during a 10 minute journey, so as you can imagine, it is so frustrating to the point driving is affecting my mental health!
All the sensors are clean and it happens more so when the heated steering wheel button is turned on (one of the many reasons I chose this car).
Its booked in to be looked at the earliest availability they have is the 20th February.
I’ve looked on the Tiguans forum and many have said they have had the steering wheel replaced and the issues still persists.
My question is I suppose if the fault isn’t fixable and it’s definitely something I can’t live with for another 2 years, can I change the vehicle on the scheme for something else?
I have very close connections to a local Ford Garage, so a Kuga would be the other option as they are very similar.
I’m annoyed as I love the car other than this issue and I paid over £4,000 AP for it.
What happens with the AP?
TIA 🙂

You must give VW the opportunity to repair any faults first. If the problem persists contact Motability for further advice with the view to return the car via termination. The advance payment would be returned on a pro rata basis.
Hope this helps you in some way.
January 31, 2023 at 2:19 pm #208016You could give Motability a ring and say the constant bings and bongs are causing a distraction when driving and explain the dealer can’t book it in untill the 20th Feb. As @Carmad has said it’s highly unlikely Mb will let change the car withould the dealer looking at it first and are more than likely to put you in a hire car.
If the problem continues to persist after repair you are more likely to suceed in getting a new vehicle penalty free.

If yiu are looking at an automatic Kuga, please be aware it has a CVT gearbox. Very noisy when accelerating, much worse than some pinging
January 31, 2023 at 3:33 pm #208026Hi guys,
thank you for your help, I’ll give motability a call to inform them just been out in it again I cleaned the front sensor ( only had a full body wash Sunday) just to see and as soon as I turned the car on it pinged. On the journey home it only started pinging continuously when the heated seat was on. I presume the heated seat and steering were are connected to the same component which could be the issue. Fingers crossed it gets fixed as other than this I love the car!
I’ll definitely inform them though of the issues so they are aware. I’m keeping a daily log from now until it goes in.

I had the same problem with mine. Needed a new steering wheel fitted, this sorted the issue

I have a 2021 2.0 Kuga AWD with the 8 speed auto and it is quiter than the Mondeo 6 speed manual i had before when accelerating,it changes gear smoothly at all speeds and crawls in traffic without any jerkiness, choose “sport mode” and it becomes very lively to drive.

January 31, 2023 at 7:18 pm #208049I’m hoping this will be the case and it will resolve however other forums have stated after a few months the problem re-appeared.
@MickC @RogerWilkoMy car precious to this was a Kuga 2016 2.0TDCi 150 Manual.
I switched to auto because of my 2 hour journeys I had what I called ‘clutch knee’ and I no longer have that problem since being in an auto.
I’m in high hopes for it to be fixed as I love the car! I feel however Kuga’s are bigger which I like. But either way I just want to enjoy driving and if this pinging goes away I’ll be happy! However if it doesn’t I simply can’t live with it. What is the fuel consumption like with the Kuga. My previous Kuga did 49-51 mpg on the same run my Tiguan does 45-47 which I don’t think is too bad for a 4wd and Auto. But haven’t owned a petrol vehicle for 7 years so no idea what the efficiency is, I do 40 miles a day minimum.
I’ve got my fingers crossed VW can fix it, as I was in hopes of purchasing it at the end of the lease.
January 31, 2023 at 8:23 pm #208054Our last Motability car was a VW Tiguan 2.0TDi 190 DSG. There were a number of things that really irritated me about the car, mostly because the VW technology didn’t work half as well as the same systems on a BMW that I was running at the same time (or, indeed, as well as the BMW that we replaced the Tiguan with).
Whilst most of these things were just how the VW systems work (and why we didn’t order another one), one issue was downright dangerous and it was the radar emergency braking system. On three separate occasions the car applied the emergency brakes for no reason – once on a motorway (which could have been fatal) and another time in heavy rain when a van had been tailgating me but had thankfully turned off seconds before. If it has happened moments sooner he would have rear ended me.
The VW dealer (who was useless) had the car in twice, cleaned out the sensors and recalibrated them, but I was always wary that it might do it again. After one of the two most serious incidents I called Motability and said that I was having to turn the system off manually every time I drove the car, which was far from ideal (as I’d sometimes forget) and, whilst I am a very experienced driver, I didn’t feel confident driving it. They agreed that if I wanted to they would allow me to change the car early. As by this time we were in the last year of the car I stuck it out, but I was very glad to get rid of the car in the end.
As others have said, you have to give VW a few chances to sort it out, but if they can’t I think that you will find Motability to be sympathetic. The issue then, of course, will be lead times on whatever you replace it with as, rather stupidly, Motability don’t recycle perfectly good cars that are also returned early.

Came here to say this! Same thing on my Golf. Maybe it was the clock spring iirc. Necessitated two 30 mile round trips to show them the error, it was then that I realised that my next car wouldn’t be from them! Haha
Then they put it back on wrong and it was a palaver during COVID ?? oh my God I hate cars.
"Come on BYD Seal!"February 1, 2023 at 3:16 pm #208161Been put in it today I contacted motability and told them I’m keeping a log, they were sympathetic and agreed we will somehow resolve the issue and I won’t be left without a vehicle.
So my log today was 16 minutes – 7 miles – it pinged 18 times! 1st ping when engine turned on- then heated seat and steering was put on.
7 minute journey it pinged 8 times! Same as above heated on
5 minute journey it pinged 7 times! No heated on at all.
also had this :
ACC: predictive control currently unavailable
Which I haven’t had before?
it’s averaging just over 1 ping a minute, so frustrating.
Another 19 days until it goes in.
Motability said it was a good idea to keep a log then log after it’s been in to see if there is any difference.
February 1, 2023 at 3:25 pm #208164@coruro – Get a wet cloth or kitchen roll and clean off the exterior windscreen above your rear view mirror and (most importantly) the large VW badge on the front grille (which has sensors behind it). That used to clear any ACC errors when I had my Tiguan and it used to happen at this time of year, particularly if there was any snow as the sensors got covered in muck.

Similar boat to me …..this car is my first auto because could no longer cope with clutch ankle and knee and the wrist doing gear changes the electric handbrake is a must.
Been on a journey today 100 mile round trip at 65/75mph returning 48/55mpg.
If you like your VW i hope they can mend it for you
February 20, 2023 at 1:48 pm #209879Thanks, everyone eagerly awaiting VW to contact me as I took it in this morning.
My courtesy car (22 plate Golf) is absolutely disgusting, theres rubbish in it (sweet wrappers in every nook!) and dirt on all the mats as well as considerable amount of dust, upon handover.
Issues I have since then are; the stitching on rear passenger seat, big pocket; has come undone, and my back windscreen wiper makes an awful dragging noise, the blade itself doesn’t look to be worn. so no idea? but I mentioned both whilst I was there.
They said they would call me later on and let me know and if I couldn’t get back today; tomorrow for the courtesy car so, they seem pretty positive of an outcome! I’ll update on the error codes found and what they seem to think the fault is.
Its definitely not user error as many in Tiguan forum have experienced the same even after sensor, camera and steering wheel refits and have also ended up handing their cars back, because they said the same they can’t live with it 🙁
I know in the Tiguan forum its a replacement steering wheel or faulty camera, but I left them the book of logs I kept of when it would go off and how often and what I did, no pattern really all to do with wiring, heated seats, heated steering wheel, when indicator was turned on, when steering wheel was turned to go around a round about.
Travel assist went off 5/6 times on the 15 minute journey there this morning and also had the autonomous breaking system activate for no reason whilst driving. Ugh it just seems like one thing after the other.
February 20, 2023 at 6:52 pm #209895So just had the call,
It needs a steering wheel replacement, expected wait time is 3 months could be longer they don’t know and there is no way for them to turn the noise off.
So I informed them I can’t live with it another 3 months and his reply is ‘we need that courtesy vehicle back tomorrow’ so motability have escalated me to the customer relations team and im awaiting a resolution as I just can’t deal with that another 3 months.
VW will have to wait for their car back as I have no other means of transport.
It’s unreasonable to expect someone to wait 3 months for a part.
Neither me or my son can stand the noise, he’s autistic and effected by noises its effecting my mental health, no car is worth the amount of stress this has given me.
Being as it is a manufacturer fault, which others have confirmed their resolution is only temporary as others have had the issue re-surface after a replacement steering wheel has been fitted,
I’ve been advised by Motability under no circumstances am I to hand the courtesy vehicle back until they say so.
Got to allow until 5pm tomorrow to hear from Customer Relations Team.
February 20, 2023 at 7:29 pm #209898Volkswagen’s parts problems are ridiculous. This mechanism is on so many of their cars ?
Motability may offer to get a hire car for you if courtesy car is unavailable.
"Come on BYD Seal!"February 20, 2023 at 7:46 pm #209900Aside my daughters disability she is also Autistic and would tear the car apart to gain a means of escape with that type of noise pitch. Its bad enough if I forget to turn the radio down before she gets in!
My parents Crossland was in for over three months waiting for a central locking module when it eventually came the dealer said the screws were missing so it was another month. They refused to get them from the local nuts and bolts shop!!
Anyhow Mb put them unto a hire car which was sourced by the RAC.
Best of luck and hope you get a favourable out come.
February 20, 2023 at 8:07 pm #209905Yes, I can’t stand it, the only issue is it is a known fault with no definitive remedy only temporary.
I’ve seen on a forum that people have had the replacement steering wheel and months later the issue returns, I just haven’t got the energy to deal with back and forth.
In all honesty I would rather change it to something else, I thought it would be similar to my Kuga but its not the boot struggles to fit my sons special needs buggy in without ample room for all his other luggage! never had that issue with my Kuga.
Im regretting the Tiguan 🙁 The autonomous breaking system has gone off randomly as well in situations where i’m in control and it’s thrown me forward whilst belted in the seat. I don’t know all this tech, the only thing I like is the lane assist that shows you on the wing mirrors when a car is coming up beside you. I can live without everything else.
I’ll see what Motability advise tomorrow.

Had so many similar problems with my SEAT Tarraco. The faults are common across the VW, Skoda and SEAT ranges. Audi seems to be exempt from these !
The standard answer is a software update, which is just a stalling action.
In the end mine was in the garage from May to July last year trying to fix problems. In the end Motability asked for the vehicle back as it was unfixable and I have been in hire car since.
February 21, 2023 at 11:09 am #209955Yes , there doesn’t seem to be a permanent fix I have emailed VW to confirm if there is one? I doubt I’ll be setting foot in the car again, have no confidence in it and in all honesty don’t feel its safe.
It also had a few issues of the autonomous breaking system going off randomly when driving, did it on the way to the dealership yesterday at 50mph. So I have emailed and asked them to confirm the error codes showing.
Are you in a hire care because of waiting for a replacement order? If so what have you gone for?
February 21, 2023 at 12:42 pm #209971I have a SEAT Tarraco for just over 3 years, having driven just over 18k miles. In all this time I have had no problems to deal with. Autonomous braking has never kicked in apart from me reversing too close the bins inside the car-port. Previous to that I had a SEAT Leon estate and 1 problem, the nearside wheel bearing replaced after hitting a rather large pothole at 65mph on the motorway.
Just hope the replacement Hyundai Kona will be as reliable!
February 21, 2023 at 3:08 pm #209983…I don’t know all this tech, the only thing I like is the lane assist that shows you on the wing mirrors when a car is coming up beside you. I can live without everything else. I’ll see what Motability advise tomorrow.
That’s Blind Spot Assist. Lane assist is the car “helping” you stay in your lane, usually by fighting with you or vibrating the steering wheel if you change lanes without signalling. Something I and many others turn off on our travels as its a pain in the backside, especially on narrow roads.
In life, it's not who you know that's important, it's how your wife found out.
February 21, 2023 at 5:07 pm #209988Indeed, turned mine off after the first time it kicked in whenI was going to overtake!
Automatic braking on my 2020 Seat Ateca can be a real pain at times, sometimes it’s completely random others you can see why it cut in even if it’s massively early, like a car slowing at a roundaboout about 80-100m in front or a parked car.
The digital dash has been pretty good apart from the trip counter constantly resetting itself and altering the display back to “Ramge” when I have it set on “Consumption”
Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!
February 21, 2023 at 6:01 pm #209991On the contrary I’ve found it quite unobtrusive and predictable. Had heard nightmare stories but haven’t experienced any problems in 7 years.
"Come on BYD Seal!"February 21, 2023 at 6:37 pm #209995Had a couple of phone calls with Motability and VW today, part is expected in July sometime, but no guaranteed date, this is too long to wait.
I’m cancelling my lease (effectively) but no charge as it isn’t my fault and placing a new order of a different vehicle, make and model.
I am able to keep a courtesy car until the new car is here, as much as I loved the car its issues mean I don’t feel safe or that I can rely on it, for me practicality overcomes looks, I’ve also made the decision to go back to a manual so I am in more control.
VW have apologised for the dirty courtesy car and have offered me a different vehicle when one comes available or I can keep this one they have said whilst there is a problem with the car they won’t take the courtesy car from me unless my car is returned/lease cancelled then motability will need to arrange a courtesy car (which will happen at some point this week/early next week). They assured me they don’t treat Motability customers differently (not how I feel) my optional extras were paid direct to the dealer and have nothing to do with Motability, so motability said, so I will be kindly asking for a word with the manager and be asking for this to be refunded from the dealership when I hand back their courtesy car as the least they can do for the stress it has caused.
I now have to pay out the AP for the new car- I will get my AP from previous car back pro-rata after collection of new car due to having a courtesy car as a temporary replacement (which is fair enough, I can’t be left without a car, I don’t care what it is so long as it doesn’t ping at me a million times).
Overall i’m pleased with how understanding motability have handled my case, and how empathetic they have been even if I did describe it as ‘ wanting to rip the steering wheel off the car’ it drove me that insane!
Fingers crossed for the speedy delivery of my new car once its ordered, one less thing for me to worry about is that noise, unreliability and random breaking attacks, its literally been torture for me and kept me up all night with worry over what I would do and wouldn’t wish the noise ive experienced on my worst enemy!
Im looking at the Kuga 1.5 Ecoboost Petrol ST-Line X ( gone against the hybrid as my friend had a fiesta who’s battery was faulty repetitively and it wouldn’t fully re-charge and was on constant less than 20% so she handed hers back after one week) its also the only vehicle on the scheme I can afford AP wise with the difference from the last one Im also in need of a bigger boot than the Tiguan and the Kuga is slightly bigger and my sons Special Needs Buggy fits in much nicer than the Tiguan, I’ve considered the Tuscon, Sportage, Qashqai and X -trail. (if anyone has any pro’s or con’s that would be great)
Ive never experienced poor customer service with Ford either, but that’s probably because I know a lot of them and they treat me like family, so its re-assuring to know if I had any issues with the new car I know I’d be in the best hands possible.
Hopefully it will all be sorted by the end of the week.
February 21, 2023 at 7:02 pm #210000I’m glad you’ve got a resolution. I have to say that I don’t miss our last Tiguan one bit. Whilst they are well equipped, I’m not a fan of how many of the VW systems work, especially when you’ve been used to the same systems operating far better in other manufacturers cars. I cannot think of a single system that doesn’t work better in the BMW that we replaced it with – and that includes forward collision assist, cruise control, adaptive headlights, Sat Nav, voice control etc. Actually, that’s a lie. There is one feature that I miss from the Tiguan and that’s AutoHold, but that’s it.
Hopefully your Ford dealer will give you an honest answer on lead times for a Kuga, as Ford have had some of the longest delays and 12-15 months was the norm not that long ago. Nissan seem to be the quickest at the moment.
I would urge you to think long and hard about reverting to a manual transmission having had an auto. Many people who do that live to regret it.
