Morning,
had an MOT last month all 4 tyres on a safe tread limit, 5 mm but all 4 tyres given an advisory on the condition of the rubber, perishing and slightly cracking on the sidewalls, car on extended lease, 4 years old.
Booked car in via kwikfit mobile service, tyres ordered and engineer arrived in the allotted time slot , all very efficient cannot complain with the process there, he said straight away these tyres are legal and authorisation for replacement would not be given, he phoned though and he said not authorised as still legal?
we received the kwikfit report via email it jus mentioned tread depth not rubber condition.
where do I stand on this ? He said they are safe to drive with?

Speak with Motability and say during the MOT, it was reported the sidewalls are perished and cracking on all 4 corners. You called KrapFit who just looked at the tyre depth and you then recieved a report via email saying the tread depth was legal. Ask for the tyres to be changed as you don’t feel safe driving the vehicle with perished and cracked sidewalls. Motability will most likely phone throgh to Krapfit and authorise their replacement 🙂
Depending how bad they are on both the inner and outer sidewalls, its an offence to drive with them and with the likelyhood of 3 points per corner if you ever got pulled over for a spotcheck by the police, as once your tyres have perished, their strength and structure becomes compromised in most instances.
A fone call to MB should fix it. Its an advisory an easy to check, they should instruct kwickfit to replace them.
Motability are playing the waiting game in hope, seeing your into your forth year, that you renew the car before the expense of four new tyres.
I had this with my front brake pads when on its first MOT there was an advisory of low pads and Motability declined the renewal because I had a new car on order. As it turned out the new car took 15 months to be delivered and that meant a second MOT a year later where the service department gave it an instant fail and just to add a twist to the knife in my back, notice my back and not MB, they kept the car in over night because they said they never had the pads in stock so I was left high and dry with no car all because MB said no the year before.
It turned out that during the fourth year while waiting for the new car I had to have two new tyres as well so these car delays cost MB as well as our patients.
