Took the plunge!

      Finally committed to a new Tiguan Allspace.

      However, it’s a private purchase. After doing the “sums”, it became quite apparent that buying an Allspace Elegance model privately was preferable to, and cheaper than, leasing an Allspace Life model through MB.

      I just felt I would be disappointed with the Life model.

      After reading on a Tiguan forum last week that VW prices are going up on April 1st by about 3% I figured I’d lock in the current price and saw my dealer on Thursday.

      Interestingly, he quoted delivery for the end of October this year! I said I would be very surprised (and pleased) if I saw it this year!

      I’ll check in from time to time on this forum, in case MB offers improve but I somehow think they won’t.

      Anybody any idea about switching Road Fund Tax disability class from a MB car to a private one? Can it be done instantaneously? i.e. on collection of the new car? I guess that’s how it would work if changing from one MB car to the next.

        The mb car shouldn’t be using your disability tax class I believe. They claim “tax is included”

          Congratulations on your purchase Huffpuffin. I’ve seen some big discounts advertised on Tiguan’s for private customers, so with the extortionate AP’s that Motability are now asking I’m not at all surprised to hear that you can run one cheaper privately. An added bonus is that you will have the desirable Elegance model rather than the poverty spec Life model. However, you need to be prepared to be challenged by those who steadfastly refuse to accept that there are cheaper and better options out there than Motability ?

          I suspect that our current Motability car will be our last, unless there are absolutely massive improvements from where we are now (in terms of choice and AP’s), but thankfully we won’t have to make that decision until 2024. I strongly suspect that things will be a lot better by then, but I’m doubtful that it will be back to where it needs to be in order to tempt us to stay. Hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised though!

            @Capuchin Have to disagree with you there. My copy V5 states “Tax Class  78 – Disabled”

            Now as far as I am aware, only one vehicle per person can have that disabled exemption at any one time.

            Thanks @Glos Guy. I am sure I won’t be disappointed. Yes, I did get a good discount!

              Huffpuffin you are correct they do only have one car at a time for disabled tax class. You can sort out the taxation with the post office and a form i did it myself before

                    @Huffpuffin

                    I left the scheme last August, first thing you need to do is contact DWP/PIP and request a new “Certificate of Entitlement” as you have to have a new one every time you change your car (doesn’t apply for Motability)

                    You will need a V62 in order to change the taxation class to disabled and can only be done at the post office, one thing to be aware of though is to NOT let the post office stamp the certificate in any way at all (the old type was good for 4 years and needed stamping every year, not so with the latest and any stamp will invalidate it immediately) as some P.O. staff still want to do this STOP them before they try, this way you can then use the same form every year to renew online.

                    Not entirely sure what else you will need as being a new car you won’t get a V5 on collection, best to google that one.

                    I’m on my second car since leaving and had to request a new form both times, only takes about a week to arrive though.

                    Good luck with the Tiggy ??

                      Good luck to the OP and if it were not for lending money at my age I would go down the private buy road too as it really makes sense now.

                      I’m already doing things now that I would not of dreamt of a year ago but seeing the state of Motability lately I’m on the verge of cancelling the hoist for my car and at this moment testing my own brand new hoisting method of loading my scooter onto the car.

                      Call it a lifeboat if you will just in case I abandon MB all together and go second-hand with my independent hoist and not their over prced hoist’s.

                      Well done Huffpuffin.

                        @ChrisK

                        My latest car had a 100kg hoist fitted, I say had as I have removed it, prefer ramps plus my powerchair weighs in at 130kgs so no good anyway.

                        Not sure if you would be interested but you are welcome to it if you want.(it was fully working when I removed it btw)

                          @vinalspin

                          Thanks for the offer vinalspin but I’m trying to do away with the hoist that’s fitted to the car.

                          I’m experimenting with a Elev8 portable mobilty hoist, weather permitting so the hoisting into the car is not dependant on Motability’s cars and can be used anywhere with anyone.

                          I’ve got an Autochair 80 Kg 4 way hoist in my current car at the moment and intend to remove it when the new car makes an appearance and the Elev8 is the same price as the new Autochair I’ve ordered and intend to cancel it.

                          Will make a new thread in a month or so about the Elev8 and how I get on but for now its looking promising.

                          Thanks once again.

                            I did the same as you last year and left mb after 15 years. The grief I had in getting my “certificate of entitlement” then was bad enough as they firstly sent me a *letter* of entitlement stating my PIP amounts despite me explaining clearly what I required. And now … guess what? Yes, I just checked my certificate of entitlement and it was stamped by the post office at the time! ??

                            my question is, can I still not just reuse it when I renew my free tax online? Tax runs out on 31/3 and I doubt I’ll get a replacement Certificate of entitlement in time knowing the efficiency of the DWP.

                              @UncJ

                              I only found this out when I went to tax and change class to disabled on second car, it was refused and I had to call and get a new one sent out, after discussing this with the PIP rep on the phone they explained it to me and told me under no circumstances to allow the P.O. to stamp the form.

                              I can only assume that when it comes to yearly renewal you have to send a scanned/photographed copy of the form and anything on it will cause the invalidation.

                              You said you had trouble getting the form? Strange as both times I found it very easy and quick to arrive (2 days the second time)

                                Thanks for the replies and advice, and especially the “no stamp” tip from @vinalspin!

                                I’ll make a note to apply for the certificate in plenty of time!
