I am pretty certain you will be offered a speed awareness course

The next letter you receive will give three choices

        1. Take a fixed penalty (fine and points)

        2. Attend a speed awareness course (similar cost to fixed penalty but no fixed points)

        3. Ask to attend court (risk of a much higher financial penalty)

Seriously the speed awareness course is ok and worth doing so I would always recommend people to do that one (you wont be offered it if you have already recently done one or your speed was much higher than limit)

Good luck with it and you are definitely right to avoid getting into a spat on the forum about detail.

Hope it works out for ya Micky!

These mobile speed cameras can pick you off a mile away. They see you long before you see them.

I ve worked with a few ex-forces who were Demobbed. You could always tell who were Para,s or RM. Their knees, legs and back were shot by the time they were 40.  No crap hats there.

Ouch, 3 points and £100! That’s a pricey day out. I know it’s frustrating when you feel you’re in the right. Maybe try a dashcam next time, could help prove your case.

Dashcam footage will not stop a ticket.

But it may put the result from the mobile speed unit in question. That could lead to a good decision.

Out of interest, is anyone aware of any case history where someone has had a speeding charge overturned due to dash cam footage? The reason I ask is that speed cameras have to be calibrated regularly and are extremely accurate. Dash cam footage would not be as credible as a defence against them as they aren’t subject to the same calibration requirements etc.

As others have said, they have usually clocked your speed before you see them, so the speed you were going when you saw them isn’t always the speed that they clocked you at, which is often why people think that they were going slower than the fine suggests.

Dash cams are more useful in accidents, but a word of caution is that having a dash cam can mean that your dash cam footage can ultimately prove that you were in the wrong, rather than the other person! It doesn’t always follow that the person with the dash cam is blameless!

Also dashcams read speed across face of earth so if going up or down a hill the speed they show will be wrong.

Old friend of mine was major parachute regt ,got speed ticket ,disputed it in court ,he said i was not travelling over 30, he asked insisted see proof of when police kit last calibrated,  because he was not traveling over 30 ,aldershot area ,outcome police cancelled fine ,would not prove when kit last calibrated , prob because it had not been for some time, john was adamant he was not traveling over 30mph,at that time.

I know no more about it .

Yep, no in date calibration is the main way of getting a ticket dropped but it’s a tiny percentage

Correct, and what people often overlook is that if you insist on ‘your day in court’ and lose (as most do) then rather than just get a modest fine and 3 points (or, in many cases, a speed awareness course which avoids the points), you also incur court costs. It really isn’t worth it unless you are 100% confident that you will win (which is very different from believing that you have been wronged). Some people even instruct what are known in the trade as ‘loophole lawyers’, still lose and then incur legal and court costs that together can exceed the cost of the fine by 10 or 20 times. Usually it’s far more sensible to just take it on the chin and chalk it up to experience.

UPDATE.  Recieved letter from speed fine lot ,offered speed awarnes course £100.  Course online ,seemed complicated even though i tech savvy , think you could attend awarnes course somewhere but, it wasnt made clear , alot of sodding about it seemed ,so with my carere friend 2nd oppinion , ive accepted 3 points & paid the £100, it looked to us easist way to deal with it.

Absolutely your choice but the speed awareness course is the easiest thing in the world to do. Of course you need a computer, tablet, phone. But it is very easy. Equally attending in person is also very straightforward. The cost is the same but for most people avoiding the three points is the important bit (which sit on your licence for a few years).

Three points is not a huge problem but if you then pick up subsequent points in some way it can become a worry.

Not sure whether you should inform Motability insurance that you now have points (probably yes).

You can get an online course chaeper than £100, look at the list for Cleveland & Durham. I paid £64

That’s a shame Micky. With respect, I fear your carer has given you poor advice. It’s far better to take the course and avoid the points. If you can do it online all the better. I had a 160 mile round trip the last time I had to do one but even that was preferable to having points on my licence.

Micky, you have to log into the NDORS portal and book an online or attended coyrse at a venue of your choice, which doen’t have to be in the county the offence took place.
