BrydoHas anyone any experience of painting roof tiles?
Ive been looking online and there is lots of different paint available for this purpose however there is not much info on which type of paint is deemed the best.

I haven’t looked, Brydo, but for stuff I’m not familiar with I tend to check what Toolstation sells and read the reviews there.
February 8, 2023 at 6:28 pm #208701Also Screw Fix for the same reason as Wigwam has stated. The reviews of products are very good.

Everbuilds Black brush on bitumem based with added fibres for added adhesion, is for tiles etc. I paint the pack of my garage where damp can get in with it and it sticks like you know what and lasts.
I think Johnstones do a paint for bricks, tiles etc Think its called step paint but, no idea on lonetivity.
Make sure you remove all the moss and lichen prior to painting.
February 8, 2023 at 8:40 pm #208708Sorry Everbuild Black Jack. I got it from a roofing store a few years back about £17ish if I remember.
February 8, 2023 at 8:52 pm #208709If you want your tiles black, of course!
I’ve used Blackjack for leak repairs on a corrugated (probably asbestos!) roof many years ago, and it’s a good old remedy.

BrydoI am looking to spruce up the house and plan to buy an industrial paint sprayer this year to do the outside walls also. I like the colour anthracite for the roof and white for the walls, I plan to paint my Upvc windows and doors anthracite also.

BrydoAnd I plan to change the guttering from white to anthracite.

100%
Brydo are you sure about the roof because if I’m honest I have never heard of anyone painting a roof. If the paint doesn’t adhere properly or starts to flake, not to mention the overspray from spraying it! Obviously it is your house and you can do what you want with it.

BrydoKezo it’s all the rage up here, there must be a dozen in my street have had it done. But as I’m tight and don’t want to pay the £4000 asking price I’m doing it by myself.
The paint for each of the roof, walls and Upvc will all be different as they need to adhere to different substrates.
February 9, 2023 at 8:43 am #208740I am sure i posted this yesterday but gremlins in the works.
So @Brydo this link is for coloured roof tile paints. https://www.rawlinspaints.com/roof-tile-paints Remember you need to prep your roof before hand. Jet wash for the win.

Just be careful especially on the roof 🙂
February 9, 2023 at 9:34 am #208749Bear in mind once you’ve painted roof tiles, they’ll need repainting for ever more. When they’ve weathered and peeled, the roof will look worse than if it had never been painted. And for painting walls you can get a roller kit with a paint tank you wear on your back. Much less messy than spraying which needs a day spent masking up.

BrydoThanks for the input guys.
Yes spraying on the roof is dangerous but I have a safety harness but nowhere to attach it lol. No I can attach it to my solar panels brackets that are screwed to the rafters.
There are a number of roofs in the area that have been painted many years ago and although not perfect are still in good condition.wigwam I could use the roller but I’ve always fancied a decent spray gun so this is the perfect opportunity.
The real problem I have, apart from the wife’s objections, mainly on safety concerns, is my lack of knowledge on masonary/tile paints.

Brydo will certainly be underground if not 6ft under given his wifes objections ???

If you must do the roof yourself I’d be getting a airless sprayer probably Wagner. Even so the slightest of slight breeze’s will will cause overspray and, you may unkowingly spray your neighbours house and car, which could prove a costly mistake. I sprayed my fence with a wagner airless in the summer. There was little to no breeze yet the overspray went every where including next door ?
The other thing to bare in mind is Pro’s have access to paints not available to the DIY man. However I found this:
What chemicals are in roof coatings? Roof tile paints and treatments typically contain the following: Titanium dioxide (for reflectivity and durability). Zinc oxide (to prevent algae and mildew growth). Acrylic polymer resins (for a flexible, water-resistant finish). Fire retardants (to suppress smoke generation).
Do painted roof tiles require much maintenance?
Just like painting exterior brickwork, your roof tiles will need to be repainted regularly once done. The good news is that most coatings should last between six to eight years before needing a touch-up. How long does roof paint last? Depending on the quality and thickness of the paint, you can expect roof paint to last about 10-15 years.
