Requesting an early lease cancellation

      Hi Good Morning.

I am asking a bit of advice please .

I currently have a Seat Leon FR , I’ve had the car just over 12 months now , I’m not the driver my partner is , we love the car but unfortunately my partners health has deteriorated significantly over the past 6 months , she has arthritis in her back , we suffered covid last spring which I think has made her condition worse , she is literally having to crawl in and out of the car now due to its height,

I’m having to help her as best as I can but unfortunately due to the nature of my disability its extremely hard ,well  near on impossible infact.

Things have got so bad we are literally only using the vehicle to take me to my medical appointments and for a fortnightly food shop .

I have been a motability customer for nearly 20 years and have always returned my car in immaculate condition and have never once asked for an early termination.

We are looking at getting a higher SUV vehicle that she can get in and out of .

Is it possible to ask for an early termination if so will we incur any costs.

Any advice would be invaluable as we are really getting so stressed and worried now which in turn is leading to us arguing .

      Many Thanks.

        Good morning @Billyboy

This is from my own experience in 2018 but it is the same now as then I believe, don’t worry and just tell Motability what you have told us.

I posted this in another thread. I pick up my new car next week after terminating  the contract early on my current car, which I collected September 1st last year. (Terminated due to change in my condition)

        From very recent experience:

Admin is a sliding scale from £0 to £250 depending on the reason for the change. Medical condition changes = less admin charge / whim = max charge

(mine was £50) Motability put a note on your account from the date they agree to the change and it remains valid for 6 months ( so you can pay the admin charge and change anytime in that 6 month window)

AP,s are on a pro-rata basis calculated from start of  current contract to start of new contract.

Example:  Original AP Audi Q3 £2099 divide  36 = £58.31 by the time my new car contract starts say 15 months

        36 – 15 = 21 months remaining so multiply £58.31 by 21 = £1224.51 refunded from original AP

you need to pay new contract AP plus any options and adaptation costs, then you receive a cheque  from motability for AP refund a few days later

You lose your right to any good condition bonus on your current car but do qualify to it on your new contract

don`t let the issue burden you anymore, seriously just get in touch with Motability they are fantastic. I have cancelled 2 vehicles early in the lease , one of them after 9 months for far less than the issues you have.

          Just give them a call

Once you have the ok,they will allow you to do this right away, ring up a dealer if you know what you want, tell them you can exchange asap.

If they have a stock car you will be able to go ahead and not wait, be aware if you need to see the cars on the 12th April, make an appointment as soon as you can ,as social distancing will only allow bookings to go in showrooms and after the long time closed could be busy.

What gary says very clearly above.

ive had to terminate early & found Motability  operations very understanding, supportive and effective.

good luck and even better luck in choosing a new more fit for  purpose suv – luckily the dealerships opening again in April fir test drives etc….

                best wishes

Great result Billyboy. Whilst I feel that the Motability scheme has a number of shortcomings, in situations such as this they are absolutely brilliant. Now you can enjoy finding a car that is practical for you and that you can both enjoy. I’m sure I read on here that you still get a proportion of the good condition bonus,ie 18 months left on lease = £300 payment after car has been returned.

I vaguely remember reading that too now you mention it Mike, my own experience was 3 years ago so could well have changed from then.

I can confirm in my recent experience that a pro rata GCB will also be paid on top of the pro rata AP,
