Speedy James3 years ago this coming May I got my first fully electric car on Motability who provided a home charger.
It is a BP pulse charger which has been fixed once already and the warranty runs out in May.
I intend to get another electric car but am worried how much longer the charger will last.
I guess I will need to put additional money aside for a new charger as I believe Motability will only provide one charger.
Are others about to face the same issue?
Any thoughts please?

Speak to Motabilty and tell them you can’t schedule charges’s anymore due to the 2g sim. You may need to speak with BP, so you can tell Mb you have received no help from BP. Others on here have been able to get a new charger fitted
Have a read of this for more in depth of what you need to do 🙂
October 29, 2023 at 2:12 am #240606This really should be just a one off fitting. I feel your pain. I’d discuss it with the new dealer, see if they have any deals. What about changing your energy supplier, don’t some advertise a free charger?? You really shouldn’t have to worry about this.

Speedy JamesThanks @kezo and @DumfriesDik.
My BP pulse charger was an early one so you can’t program it.
I have read the thread that you kindly pointed out which was very helpful. I will speak to Motability again.
When I spoke to them last week the chap did say this situation might be something Motability will review in the future.
A friend has said they could get hold of a Tesla made charger for me which would be £750 plus fitting.
It just seems odd that Motability want to replace a car wheelchair hoist everything 3 years but seemingly at the moment expect the charger to last indefinitely.
There will be a lot of customers on their second EV soon as time and the push for EVs goes on.
For many who really struggle to use public charging I hope Motability find a solution even if they offer a subsidy like with the wheelchair hoists.
Anyway interested to hear views of others and I will speak to Motability again.

An EV charger will essentially last far longer than 3yrs but, as things advance in he future, thats where older ones start to come unstuck.
Motability are apart from replacing BP Pulse chargers due to the 2g sim, they are also replaing Easee chargers ( not as there is anything wrong with them in the UK) to Ohme chargers.
Keep on at Motability, hopefully you will eventually get to speak to someone else who will honour the change.
It may also be worth saying to Motability, you would like another EV but, due to the charger not being able to schedule or allow you to access cheaper charging rates (Octopus) you are having second thoughts about having another!
October 29, 2023 at 11:16 am #240628I was in the same position as you, had my BP pulse repaired twice and once they stopped supporting 2G it became nothing more than a dumb charger. Spoke to Motability and explained why i felt it was a waste of time investing in another EV when the charger simply was not up to the job and they agreed it did not serve its purpose and swapped me to the intelligent Ohme. I can now plug in at anytime of the day not just after midnight and i get cheap rate slots assigned throughout the day via Intelligent Octopus where i charge at 7.5p. The bonus of this is that the period assigned to the car for charging at that rate also means the house gets that rate as well so if i get a 45min slot say in the afternoon then we stick the dishwasher or dryer on at the same time. Winner all round.

Mark 55Hi
My BP Pulse never worked properly, 2g SIM issue. When the EV arrived, no smart charging at all. Motability arranged for Ohme Pro to be fitted. After 2 months one of the wire connectors in the junction box under the Ohme melted, the trip near the meter box unsurprisingly would not reset. It took Ohme around a month to arrange a repair. Ohme then firm that originally installed the charger, then a subcontractor. - AuthorReplies
