So went to to test drive the MG HS today..
Great car like everything about it, for me almost instantly the regenerating brake system seemed aggressive.
However Mrs aj loved it and tbh handled it far better than me..
We were so impressed we put an order in, surprisingly car will be availible Thursday next week, no deposit paid.
While looking over things read up about this regenerating braking in bad weather conditions, ie ice, snow or hard rain, are these systems safe as the MG regen to me felt abrupt after easing off the accelerator and that’s was on dry roads..
Any need for concerns..

Congrats, the HS is now a really nice car. Have you gone for the Hybrid+ or the PHEV in Trophy trim?
You should able to adjust your regen setting acordingly each time you start the car.
September 28, 2025 at 9:15 pm #313137Good evening kezo, hybrid+ trophy in black, seems nice tbh, responsive enough, just need to get used to the regen brake get up.
I did mention how abrupt it seemed, but some how no probs for my Wife…
The sales man did say there other settings to ease the braking system, just wondering how it would pan out in snow, ice, very hard rain..
September 28, 2025 at 10:18 pm #313138On low, there will be no significant breaking and you will coast similar to an ICE.

There are growing numbers of newer MG;s round here. I ny 16 houses cul de sac next door but one has a new MG ZS hybrid+, a bit further down and across the road, there is the new MG HS PHEV in a goldish colour and a MG 3 hybrid+. They have all had VW’s Volvo’s, Evoques, yet all seem very pleased with MG, especially with what comes as standard. I would have had the HS PHEV if the new one was out at the time, as it goes twice as far as the Tucson.

Regen only kicks in abruptly if you let off the accelerator abruptly. Treat your accelerator like what it is: a gradual input. Ease off the pedal, and you feel the regen kick in slowly.
Quite obviously it’s not an issue in rain, snow or ice – regen braking wasn’t invented yesterday, cars have had regenerative braking for decades.
Your wife doesn’t have an issue because she modulates the throttle. Don’t know how nice your salesman is, ask for another test drive and try easing off the throttle, you’ll notice that all of a sudden you actually rarely use your normal brakes. You just ease off and slow down that way. It takes maybe 50 miles to get used to, it’s intuitive.
I took this to the extreme and ruined the rear brake discs on the GTE within 1.5 years (because i never used them, so they rusted/pitted and we got an advisory for it).
edit: and it doesn’t seem to be a rare problem either, considering that our current car now has bloody brake disc cleaning lol.

Next: we'll see what's available in 2028.September 28, 2025 at 11:59 pm #313141I’ve never had a problem with regen in any conditions. In fact I’ve found it slows the car better on snow that physical brakes, although that may have more to do with the ability to slow the wheels with a touch more control.
In an ICE car, you lift off the accelerator and nothing happens instantaneously, the engine braking kicks in once the engine has slowed. In an EV, because it’s the electric motor, as soon as you start to release the accelerator there’s a reduction in motor speed. You take your foot off from a position that held speed and the motor immediately stops driving forward and starts slowing the car. In those milliseconds it takes, the level of adjustment between the two systems is massively different. If you slow the rate you lift your foot, you smooth out the rate of change and the speed the regen kicks in. With a little time you can control just how you transition between holding speed and slowing down in exactly the same way you can add just one mph to your speed if you’re careful with how much extra you press.

September 29, 2025 at 4:02 am #313143Thanks for the reassurance, clear explanations and advice..
Rene hit the nail on the head between my driving and the Wife.
Im very impressed driving the MG (will soon get used to the braking system), Also we got time away next week, and it will be going for a few hours motorway driving, surely I’m going to notice improve mpg, the Volvo doing 31 mpg.
September 29, 2025 at 4:26 am #313145I felt the surprise on my face after the words of, just be aware of these brakes love, it seems a bit abrupt to me after releasing the accelerator..
Then after a short drive on a quiet road, she says nothing wrong with the braking it your driving..🤨😆
I seemed to be slowing to far from the junction etc, then on the gas to get there 😳🤣😂..
Our visit to MG was great, no pressure, coffee, relaxed down to earth sales staff, pointed out a good route to drive, said do a good few laps each, see you when you get back..
Our Volvo will be picked up for service, mot, Weds from home /returned (pre arranged) Then off to MG Thurs to part with it..
Must say we loved the XC40, but it’s going now after 5 yrs, some nice memories of our time with it..
September 29, 2025 at 6:54 am #313146Could you please put photos on here when you get it has it got an electric boot that shuts with key ring etc ?
September 29, 2025 at 7:03 am #313147Morning Mike, defo get some pics up, as you know I don’t post many on here 😇🤣..
September 29, 2025 at 7:07 am #313148Yes Mike it’s got the open close from the key for the tail gate, not sure about the foot swipe…
September 29, 2025 at 10:35 am #313152ajn, the ZS hybrid+ has 3 regen levels and can be assigned to a favorites key as a shortcut. The HS will have the same set up, so whils’t you get use to the car, you can put it on it’s lowest level. Remember the higher the level, the better economy.
If you needs mats look at the online tailored mats stores far cheaper.

You will get used to it, it’s genuinely intuitive and leads to a more comfy drive. At least in my opinion. I don’t like one-pedal driving (i need the car to creep when i let off the brake), but i do nowadays drive in the highest regen settings possible in any car i drive.

Like any new car, it takes you a while to get use to a new system and then becomes easier once you are. As you see from the video, there are 3 levels of regen. There will also be * favourite buttons that act as shortcuts, to the menus you most use.

September 30, 2025 at 9:09 am #314187I have experienced nearly three years of the ‘e pedal step’ covering very nearly 30,000 miles, in all weather conditions, and I think that it is the best thing since sliced bread Qashqai ePower, now Aryia.
But, you either love it, or hate it- my daughter switches it off ,or doesn’t switch it on, when she drives my car- she absolutely hates it!
I use it in town more than dual carriageways or Motorways, ie not 100% of the time, I think that it is important to vary it’s use, so that you remember what normal braking is like, and not get caught out if it is not switched on!
