      Hi all,

As previously mentioned a few weeks ago under the title of “I20 Bumper Issues” I’ve been having trouble with my 2025 Hyundai I20. I’ve had handbrake failure, scratches on the bumper on collection, trim rattles, and gearbox trouble all since April, and last week, a problem that quite literally blows all the others away.

It locked me in the car immediately after switching the engine off, with no means of escape other than to smash a window or use the emergency boot release. No power, no door handles working, with key not working, for 20 minutes before using the BlueLink app to remotely unlock the car and escape.
I rang Motability straight away and was advised to call the RAC out to diagnose. To cut a long story short, my car has been deemed unsafe to continue using (thanks to the undiagnosed electrical gremlins) and has been left at the moderately incompetent dealer for nearly a week with no updates.
I’ve passed the stage of not wanting it back, as I’ve been given a lovely Kona Ultimate HEV from Europcar in the meantime (Unfortunately not able to have one as a scheme car due to being under 25) so does anyone have any recommendations on what to do next?

I’ve already written a formal complaint to the dealer with Motability’s guidance regarding the 5 months of poor service, poor communication and not being able to rectify the scratches as well as all the other issues. I have already mentioned to the dealer that I will not hesitate to reject it. In fact, the car was waiting to be booked in to have the problems mentioned in the formal complaint when it decided to not let me out.

I’ve already began shortlisting emergency replacement vehicles (Clio, Fabia etc etc) but I just wanted to see if anyone had any advice or suggestions on what exactly to say to Motability in order to push for a rejection of the current car as I have no remaining confidence in it to provide me with even a modicum of transportation.

      Thanks

Hopefully Motability will reject the car, if not and the dealer phones for you collect the car, you can tell Motability, you no longer feel safe driving it and lost confidence in the car, as the problems have been there since new.

In the mean time, it may be wise to start test driving replacement cars and query lead times and whats available in a short space of time.

I have always liked the look of a Clio / Captur, Nissan Juke, Peugeot 2008, Toyota Yaris Cross, VW Taigo, T Cross, Polo, but like Skoda they are pretty bare leaving paid for options, compared to say Reno etc, if you like that sort of stuff.  Outsiders MG ZS has decent kit as standard, Dacia Sandero or Jogger lol.

Only the 1.0 T-GDI manual version, and the AP is an eye watering £2799 for one with the equivalent spec as my i20. I’d also be worried about such a small engine in quite a large car especially considering I live in the countryside and have a 40 mile daily commute to the nearest major town on country roads.
It sounds like a first world problem but I’d quite like to keep heated seats and a heated steering wheel. Something that Skoda, VW and Audi charge extra for on most models with a “Reasonable” AP (Under £1,000), I paid £250 (£400 Off) on my N Line S I20 and the same car is currently £1299.

I hate to think what it’s going to be like for Q4…

Sorry to hear that you’ve had so many problems. I bought one of my daughters a new i20 Ultimate privately nearly 3 years ago and apart from a couple of minor issues, sorted under warranty, it’s been fault free. It sounds as those yours was a Friday built one! Our Hyundai dealership is brilliant. Both the sales and service teams have been first class, both as private and Motability customers.

Funnily enough, it was the heated steering wheel that featured highly on my daughters wish list (she’s a Police Officer, so works shifts) and it’s one of the few things that I’d miss about our Tucson!

Can I ask what was done under the warranty?

Heated steering wheels are an acquired taste, but I absolutely love mine and would be gutted if I had to say good Ute to the feature.

There was a rattle / vibration coming from the drivers door pocket. Also, one day my daughter couldn’t restart the car after stopping at a supermarket but after leaving it for half an hour she managed to start it. We took it to the dealership and they couldn’t find a fault. Thankfully it hasn’t done it again since (that was over a year ago). Other than that the car has been fault free, as was her previous generation i20 which she had for over 6 years from new.

I haven’t heard anything. I’m starting to think they’ve changed their minds on rolling out the idea because of all the hassle it’s going to cause. I’ve now had my rejection approved so I may be getting one with my next scheme car but if I do I’ll be disgruntled because I personally don’t see the point except from keeping the fat cats at the top of the business topped up nicely at our expense.

Glad your rejection was approved, so what you thinking of next?

Hopefully it won’t be implemented by time you get your next car!

I’m looking at all options so far. Not going to be placing an order until Q4 changes on Wednesday because I simply can’t get down to our nearest Renault showroom to even test drive a Clio until Saturday which is annoying. I’m hoping for the introduction of the Renault 5 E-Tech on the scheme on Wednesday as delivery times have decreased which was affecting their introduction on the scheme, if that appears I’ll certainly go for one of those without consideration. If it doesn’t, then it’s likely going to be a Clio or Fabia. But who knows really.
