      Hi

im having a number of issues with my new car (none massively critical – but problems never the less)

i have dropped the car off with a local dealer, to look into the problems, but i have a feeling they will draw a blank, as they are rather obscure errors/issues.

what would happen if they cant find problems, how within my rights am I in calling the original garage, and asking them to collect the car.

it was over a 4k AP 3 weeks ago, i do want the car, but im worried the faults will stay, and im left with a long wait (ideally with a loan car)

I wouldn’t think so. The new vehicle warranty is with the manufacturer. Any authorised dealer should be able to address any problems.  If you local dealer can’t fix them, I would escalate it to the manufacturers head office.

Have a word with motability, I’ve found them very easy to deal with concerning problems/ issues with a car.

I share your pain. My dealer is 100 mile round trip. I have had problems with my car since new

I dropped the car off in the dealership at the end of May and it is still there and I am in a hire car.

My lease ends in January and it is point now where  I have given up on getting it fixed properly.

In terms of Motability assistance – not a lot

I guess that’s one reason why, Certain cars i have dismissed from my shortlist if they not local, as servicing and any problems that arise is a bigger issue, than if the dealer was closer and even more so with the cost of fuel right now. Say the rubber starts coming of the wiper blade, i just pop into the dealers and they fix it, if it was a 100 mile trip may as well just fix it yourself. So is definitely something i have advised other on.

It’s ok to buy from a dealer far away as long as you can get it serviced near by unless it might become more expensive and time consuming than it should be and especially in steve’s case having issues from new only compounds that problem of the distance.

I get for some there none local at all, like where i used to live, when i first joined the scheme. but for me there quite a few local to pick from but others like seat, bmw, Mercedes, mini, fiat and others are not.

I  had a Volvo V40 which had a habit of just shutting down, I gave the dealer a couple of chances to sort it. In the end Motability agreed to terminate the comtract on the grounds of safety.

From April 2024 Toyota BZ4X now From april 2025 Skoda Enyaq 85 Edition due to BZ4x being written off

It’s not the problem of dealers being so far away, its more of the problem as to why brand new cars are breaking down.

Personally I’ve never had any of my 4 Motability cars breakdown but with all the stop, start, stop, start going on in manufacturing at the moment with lack of parts, chips or employee’s and the switch to untried tech in EV’s lets hope this isn’t going to be a thing for the next few years or more.

The other worrying thing is the dealers not having parts to fix your car and waiting months for parts to arrive and hope shoecake your problems are fixed in a quick manner.

Can be as simple as bad code and when the perimeters are met and no what if is defined then you’ll get issues bugs and crashes. like on the c4 i had the infotainment system would crash and was no way to reboot it only turning off the car and restarting, which cannot be done on a motorway say and it controlled alot of the cars functions. On the golf you could hold the power button for 10 secs then it would reboot.

That will be the big problem with having no wing mirrors and camera’s if they glitch what then?

I did have a problem with my golf, when i stopped at lights (with no car in front) and had been using adaptive cruise. When lights went green and you put your foot on the gas or press resume the engine would roar and the car would go nowhere and you’d smell burning clutch and get beeped from cars behind.

You had to turn off ignition then then restart the car. Didn’t happen all the time either, dealer could not find a fault or replicate it. Anyhow there was a software/firmware update due, they did it and it never happened again. Peresonally i think it was an issue with auto hold and acc being on and it not being deactivated when pressing the peddle or the button.

Many cars seem to have software issues, few seem to have mechanical issues thesedays and some electrical  like the stop/start frying the battery ? also happened on the golf, rac came put a more powerful newer one on it and it did not have an issue at all after that. That’s the only breakdown I’ve had on 4 scheme cars and any other new cars I have bought. You can get the occasional lemon off the production line and i do agree right now seems there could be more than usual.

I had the same infotainment issue on my SEAT, It would lock up. However, pressing the the start/stop button didn’t turn the engine off. What you had to do was to put into park, open the door, close the door and restart. You get some bizarre looks when you are stuck in traffic doing this. On a motorway could be entertaining ….
