Problem with my inverter.

99% of the time my inverter works seamlessly however when I plug in the “Granny Charger” to charge the car the app on my phone shows the inverter not receiving any solar, I haven’t checked the inverter to see what’s showing on the screen but will do that today.

It doesn’t happen with anything else like washing machine or dishwasher so don’t understand why the car charging would be different.

Just to prove me wrong I checked my app a moment ago and there was no solar even though the sun is shining and the car isn’t charging.

If only I could get my installer out to fix it 😩

is the export meter showing any solar generation?

My initial assertion that the inverter problem only coincides with charging the car turns out to be bo££0&s. I’ve put the washing machine on and the inverter has stopped recording.

The photo below shows my smart meter reading at the same time as this.

I would advise to restart the inverter and app (you will have to re connect wifi in the app). You can also log into sunsync.net to look at the inverter if you have an account.

Its most likely the inverter is not set up correctly and how far I can take you depends on your skills, though there is plenty of advice and video’s online.

Yes but no thanks to the installer who said at the last minute he had no funds to buy the batteries so I had to step in and pay him then he paid Fogstar who called me and told me they had been paid and that they would be delivered to my house hopefully Monday.

Well well, who’d have believed it the batteries have arrived 🎉 🥳 🎈

I was worried I would need to get them off the van and into the garage but luckily I was at the shops and the wife asked him to put them in the garage and he did.

@22stone a piece I won’t be moving them into position the installer can do that. I was hoping he’d be on the phone organising a day and time for the install but not yet but hopefully some time this week.

@kezo unfortunately positivity left me about 5 months ago but I live in hope.

I will be looking to set the batteries to charge up fully every night and discharge/force discharge fully everyday. I will be getting him to set all my solar to return to the grid via my Outgoing Octopus tariff, as will all of my forced discharged battery power.

@Kezo, have you any experience with fitting solar panels within the MCS guidelines of 400mm from any?roof edge such as ridge tiles or gutter tiles.

One of my array is a triangle which means, if using the 400 mm distance guidelines from MCS, a reduction in the number of panels that can be fitted as even a corner of the panel would need to be 400mm from a ridge tiles.

I spoke to MCS today who confirmed there are ways around this 400mm distance. This is what they wrote.

How far is it from the roof edge?

When I did my C&G course it was 300mm from the roof edge & 60cm from chimney and that in order to reduce the wind load the rule of thumb for the array was 5 times the distance between the modules and roof surface. Do bare in mind England & Wales have to satisfy building regs. so not particularly appropiate for Scotland.

I’ll dig into it later but 200mm comes to mind however, in the mean time south Larnarkshire advices:

If your property doesn’t come into any of the above categories then you do not need to apply for planning permission:

“when attached to your house or flat, the solar panels will project more than one metre from any outside wall of the house, or any part of the roof or chimney”

@kezo, to put a bit of meat on the bone so to speak, my existing FIT payment panels are 16 panels split over two roofs, 8 panels on each. The existing panels are smaller than any new panels I will be using to replace the existing.
My installer is adamant that he won’t fit any panels within 300mm of an edge. This will reduce the number of panels I can fit on each array, from 8 to possibly 5, maybe 6. However if he follows the the info from MCS above, ie use more fixings if the panels are closer than 400 mm from an edge, he would be able to get 8 panels on each array.

I was just wondering if you had experience of using additional fixings to secure the panel rails and if so what does this actually look like ie how many additional brackets, how close does the bracket need to be to the end of the rail.

Not sure if all the above makes sense but basically it’s a fixings issue about holding down the rails when panels are closer than to the edge of the roof and according to MCS the minimum distance, without additional fixings,  is 400mm, which to my mind is way more than necessary.

The only person who got all his work done by Friday was Robinson Crusoe.

The closes’t I have gone is 174-180mm from plane of a pitched roof, where an additional 2 extra rails from memmory were installed and the owner (a carpenter I new from site) strenghened the rafters by spreading the load of a 80’s 3 bed detached. Normally I would not go closer than 300mm which corresponds to what your installer is saying. On a hipped roof you need to pay particular attention on distance away from the sloping ridge tiles.

Its not simply a matter of additional rails, you need to know if your rafters will take the additional wind pressure, without causing stress damage to the roof or the PV module, as the uplift in the edge zone can be 3- 4 times greater than in the centre. The other issue going 200mm from the edge, risks rain overshooting the gutters.

There is a fairly simple calculation (Qp x A x Cp x SF) for wind uplift and the requirement of extra fixings and whether the rafters require any additional strengthening, which your installer should be aware of, as a member of one of the two electrical bodies (I will find something easy to explain).

Not having seen your roof, its hard to know but, yes there are possibilities of extra rails would surfice however, its how adamant your installer is and whether he would take responsibilty on MCS’s say so or not. MCS recently downgraded wind up lift and you’ll ofter find building/planning guidence is often contridictory to that of the MCS which doesn’t help.

@kezo we’ve swapped emails for a good deal of this afternoon and he thinks it will be fine to have 8 panels on each array. He has based this on a panel size of 1722 x 1134 which is a bit limiting but at least we have a “bit” of an agreement. He has software that works this out for him so lets hope its accurate. How much money do you want to bet that its not lol.
