Your dealer should be able to swap your plate to the new vehicle on changeover day.
They can, but only if I have mine on retention. I was wondering how far in advance I had to apply for the certificate.
Current car: Mini Countryman EV in very shiny black!
Previous car: MG HS Exclusive in nice shiny black.
When I was going to change the dealership said they could deal with all the changes there was no mention of having to go onto a retention – what does the motability site say?

If we agree to add your personalised number plates, we may also be able to update the online DVLA record on your behalf whilst you are on the phone to us or with your dealer.
We can remove your plate for you if you are returning your car or transferring number plates between cars, but we are unable to accept any responsibility for the retention or transfer of a personalised plate and you may lose your entitlement to the personalised plate if we have not been notified of your plans. Please contact us on 0300 456 4566 to tell us what you plan to do or speak to your dealer.

Done this exact process this week . Called motabilty on Tuesday , received email with v948 hour later , and received retention certificate on Thursday . Only on phone to motabilty for around 10 mins very easy process they do it all for you , £80.

Funny as the vw dealer who supplied our car told us he’d contacted motability and the private plate would need to be added once we got the car home?
But they did make me up a set of plates for me.
I never believed him, as other dealers have swapped my private plate on purchase with no problems.
